GDLK Operations
Re: GDLK Operations
Re: GDLK Operations
What happens frequently is a business sees an advantage in moving product by rail and installs the infrastructure. Then the reality of the service difference between truck and rail sets in. If the intent was a ploy to leverage rail for better trucking rates they would have transloaded half mile away on the MSO and demonstrated they were serious. Fresh Solutions installed three switches and a couple thousand feet of track. No small ag business would gamble upward of $500K on sidings in the hope truck lines would lower their rates. GDLK can provide the best service in the world. If a Class 1 along the way decides the traffic doesn't fit their "PSR" model the rail will rust.

Use to get potatoes in, but now they grow their own and service local/regional markets.MQT1223 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 7:41 pmWhat's the story on the industry just outside of White Pigeon after making the curve south from the MSO interchange (Not Andersons). It looks like a produce warehouse? Seems like the spur and building is quite new and yet the rail is well rusted over suggesting they didn't ship much? Was this more of a ploy in keeping the trucks honest for their shipping needs or did NS scare them off?

Stone train in Kalamazoo as of 17:10.
Re: GDLK Operations
Anyone have any idea why the GDLK has so many Auto Racks south of the GR yard? I don't think GDLK serves any car dealers. I can see them from US 131 north of the Gordon Foods plant.

Word is 2204 and 3834 might be leaving soon. Might want to get your photos of them while they are still on the Elk.

A new unit went north through Byron Center today. I want to say it was WAMX 3807. Last two digits correct at least. Very fresh looking paint, black unit as usual.1TrackMind wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 4:35 pmWord is 2204 and 3834 might be leaving soon. Maybe 3907? I believe 3807 was sold to MEI a while back...~Z~ wrote: ↑Fri Nov 05, 2021 12:31 pmA new unit went north through Byron Center today. I want to say it was WAMX 3807. Re: GDLK Operations
Well, whatever it is, they left it up in Grand Rapids when they came back south this afternoon.

its 3807
Re: GDLK Operations
Thanks for confirming! Apparently the Watco roster I have been looking at does not have this unit listed. I guess this would be 3807:2?
One source claims that this is ex-BNSF GP38-2 2102. Is this correct?

Re: GDLK Operations
I had heard it was ex BNSF but I don't know the original number.
Re: GDLK Operations
I understand that NS 94M ballast trains of Amtrak hoppers from Birdsboro, PA are interchanged with the Grand Elk in Elkhart. The GDLK would take them to Kalamazoo. Does GDLK run the whole train up there, or split the cars up and add them to existing trains?
Thanks
Andy
Thanks

Re: GDLK Operations
That was the first WAMX 3807. That unit was sold off to MEI in 2013. Unsure where it is now.GTW wrote: ↑Fri Nov 12, 2021 9:25 amPC 77621TrackMind wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 2:42 pmI had heard it was ex BNSF but I don't know the original number.
The folks at LocoNotes have confirmed WAMX 3807:2 is indeed ex-BNSF GP38-2 2102.
It is rumored WAMX 3808:2 will also be coming to the Elk, and it is ex-BNSF 2105.

Now all they need to do is put the Grandelk logo on the side.
