G-P Resin plant in Grayling ships tank cars to Weyerhaeuser Particle Board plant...less than a mile away. G-P Resin plant used to ship tank cars to their own particle board plant in Gaylord when it was still open...about 27 miles.

A locomotive uses gallons per minute of fuel just at idle, where a truck getting 4 mpg could make a round trip on $4.00.
Uhhhh... This statement is way off. The SD40-2's in idle use 5 gallons per hour idling. GP units less and so on.
SD40-2 Fuel Consumption per notch
Low Idle: 4 gal/hr
Idle: 5 gal/hr
Notch 1: 8 gal/hr
Notch 2: 23 gal/hr
Notch 3: 41 gal/hr
Notch 4: 59 gal/hr
Notch 5: 82 gal/hr
Notch 6: 110 gal/hr
Notch 7: 142 gal/hr
Notch 8: 165 gal/hr
Dynamic Range 1: 5 gal/hr
Dynamic Range 2: 14 gal/hr

Someone said earlier what radio channel ABDF operates on, but I think they made a mistake. AAR channels are numbered 7 through 97. ABDF uses AAR channel 36, which is frequency 160.65 Muggerhurts. Leastwise, that is the channel I receive them on on my scanner.
