Well, it would be nice is the GTW units were kepts in GTW paint, IC units in IC paint, WC Units in WC paint, DMIR in DMIR paint..what I mean to say is leave the subsidiary paint schemes alone, at least with units in yard and local service (GP38's, SD40's) to maintain a local identity people can recognize (CN can seem alien to folks watching a CN unit switch their factory on what they have always known as the IC)..then again, progress is progress I guess, and there is nothing we can do to change CN's decision.
As for my "CN funnyfarm" comment..this is how I view all corporate headquarters.
The reason the GTW, CV, and the DWP were all in GTW blue was because they were all under CN american holding company, the Grand Trunk Corp. The GTW corp still exists, but is a shell of it's former self. As we all know, the CV was sold to Railtex in 1995, and all the locomotives left on property at that time (GP38AC's 5800-5811) came back to the GTW lines. The GT Corp/CN still owns the "CV"name and likeness.
The DW&P still is an operating railroad, but with the retirement of the 5900-5929 series SD40's this last year..the DW&P lost it's identity (other than newsprint box cars).
The GTW, despite locomotive retirements and repaints..still maintains a fairly strong presents in Michigan, in terms of yards and industrial branches (Detroit area), but GTW units on the road is rare unless you catch a local. Though they do show up on road trains occasionaly, but rarely, if ever, in the lead.
GTW units I have had the pleasure to see:
4611, 4612, 4613,4625,4929,4635(CN paint)
4901,4902,4905,4906,4909,4910,4925,4934
none of the 5800 series!
5900(CN Paint),5905 (DW&P),5913,5931(CN paint),5932(CN paint),5936,5937
6200..none!
6401(CN Paint).
