Any Train action around Guliver still?

Is there any activity in Guliver? Is the track still in regular use?

Gulliver

#411, the Green Bay-Sault Ste. Marie manifest, passes through Gulliver late mornings daily.

#412, the Sault Ste. Marie-Green Bay manifest, passes through every night westbound.

L-543, the Gladstone-Trout Lake turn, runs about 5 days a week. They would probably pass through Gulliver eastbound in the evening, and westbound at night. This train handled the local switching in town (propane dealer, woodyard) as well.

The Port Inland Railway is also still running, but is probably on winter shut-down until the boats start running again in March.

Does the L543 stay in town the whole day or does it travel up to Manistique? What type of engine do they use? Any idea if they mind train watchers in the woodyard?

Also the Port Inland Railway does it get down into the Gulliver area regularly? In the summer. Also what engines are they running?

L-543, Port Inland

Unread post by peteynmu »

L-543 runs from Gladstone to Trout Lake and back, so would only be stopping briefly in Gulliver to handle the switching in town. It gets any kind of medium-size road power, usually 1 or 2 engines. Today's had a WC GP40-2 & a WC SD45; I've seen CN GP40-2's, CN SD40-2's, a WC SD40, WC GP40's, WC GP38-2's, WC SD45's, and even a Missabe SD45-2 used on this train recently.

The Port Inland Railroad is east of Gulliver a ways, and I've heard the only place it can be seen from public property is a crossing on a sideroad off the Suel Croix Lighthouse Rd. They just run from the limestone quarries around there to the dock at Port Inland, where the stone is loaded into ore boats. They very seldom interchange anything with the WC, but the connection is between Gulliver and Gould City. The railroad uses a fleet of ex-Chicago & Eastern Illinois SD20's last I heard.

Hope that helps. I've haven't railfanned that area much.
