GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
Well seeing as their Ex AA units are getting old and they can't lease those GATX units forever are they starting to look at newer power? (if anybody knows) and if so what kind of power would the be looking at? i doubt some SD-70macs could go on the TC and PT tracks but do you think they would want more power then those old GPs?

I don't see those 35s going anywhere. GLC's mechanics always keep them maintained.

The 35 are prolly safe for now but i could see them replaced in a few years. Maybe a few GP38/40's or heck even some SD38/40's

Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
Does anyone know how long 2675 and 2663 are leased for?
I could see them getting some Geeps or SD's a few years down the road. Can't go wrong with 38 and 40 series SD's and GP's. It'll be sad when the 35's are done, though.

Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
they still have just under 5 years. that will never happen janga
Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
Doesn't the state own the low-nose 35s'?? I would imagine that with the current money status, the state isn't looking to get new stuff, and I can't imagine that the rr makes enough money currently to replace them at this time. If it was me, I would rebuild the major components and de-turbo them.

Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
I would like to see GLC buy some former CN stuff that is at Homewood. GLC painted SD40-2Ws would be pretty cool.

Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
When CN was selling those SDL-39's did anyone else hope they'd end up on GLC?

Uh, you know I did Don! Those would have been perfect on these northern rails. I'm sure they would have been worth their weight in gold. I myself hope GLC picks up some used GP39s like Annie did. Those are pretty good lookin' Geeps plus, U-Pac keeps ordering all those big look-alike brutes so the four motors days are numbered there.Don Simon wrote:When CN was selling those SDL-39's did anyone else hope they'd end up on GLC?

The CEO has said they prefer non-turbo charged engines going forward. But if the price of a 39 is justifiably lower than a 38 who knows...I myself hope GLC picks up some used GP39s like Annie did. Re: GLCs aging locomotive fleet.
The state only owns the majority of the track. All equipment, rolling stock, machines, vehicles, computer systems, interline systems, telecommunications, segments of the track and the main shop and all that goes with it are owned by GLC. Can't discuss private information but, the railroad is continuously prosperous.leo28150 wrote:Doesn't the state own the low-nose 35s'?? The major components are repaired/replaced on an ongoing basis. As long as there remains an active rebuild/"running takeout" market for all major components, the 35s can continue. The bigest threat to the 35s is the price of fuel. Funny, greatly increased fuel prices gives the RRs a competative advantage but would require that GLC seek other power.
De-turboing is an expensive process that is probably not cost-effective.
Any change in power is best done with the thought of interchangable parts in mind. Two entire inventories of locomotive parts and supplies along with maintenance equipment is an expensive venture.
SDs pose a special problem. A two axle truck handles all sorts of track but, the three axle truck of an SD on anything other than tangent track creates stress problems that result in picked switches...
