Is it only a dream on my part, or could it become reality that, SOMEHOW the venerable structure could be restored to her former majestic state?

Structrually, she appears sound. Since Detroit now has a love affair with casinos, why not convert MC Depot into a casino/hotel?

It's a nice idea, but the building is probably too far gone to save, and that area isn't exactly a hotbed of development, and probably won't be in our lifetimes. :(

Detroit has enough casinos, and they would likely oppose any more. The more pieces you cut a pie into, the smaller the pieces.

It was on Detroit 1-8-7 last night! Getting hooked on that show, and was suprised it was on the show. I agree though, I wish it could be saved too but I really dobt it will happen.

Saw the episode. It still looks like a beautiful building. Unfortunately it will likely never be revived.

Kind of like Tiger Stadium. I'd really hate to see it go but maybe the time has come.

In Detroit, there seems to be a pattern of neglecting historic buildings, until they are too far gone to save. Hudsons, Briggs stadium, the Monroe Block come to mind. Actually, Detroit seems determined to remove all reminders of the once great city Detroit was, and never will be again.

I agree with hoborich. I hate to get too off topic but i honestly don't think many of those on the city coucil or positions of power care much about perserving Detroits history and I could add places to the list like historic Fort Wayne and the many auto plants. I can't blame it all on the city/county government as many are privately owned and I haven't lost all hope but it is sad to hear what the city once was first hand from those who lived there during it heyday. Until the city can provide basic services and families want to live in it neighboorhoods it will never have the draw or tax base to be a great city, just a downtown destination. I know it takes a long time to comeback but it is funny to watch the "Stand up and tell 'em your from Detroit" comercials with Bill Bonds from 1984. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbP32XLY ... re=related Although I suppose it is already much better off than it was back then.

I also totally agree with Hoborich and Michael - I remember when we left MC on the New York Central for New York and it was still somewhat busy and just beautiful! That was in 1964. Fast forward to January 1988 - I took the day off from work and was part of the small crowd to see the last regularly scheduled passenger train leave MC. By then it was deteriorating (had to walk on boards over standing water where you went to the different tracks). But it was still quite beautiful.

I may get blasted here but Detroit and Michigan never got out of the rust belt mindset and never seems to be open to anything new. So the really brilliant minds and most of the money leave the state and we are left with people with no imagination, even if they have the money. It didn't help to have some of the mayors we've had either. It doesn't take alot of brains to tear something down, it does take brains and money, but mostly brains, to take some history and revive it. Someone always tries to stop any project that want to revive Detroit. I do have some faith in the current Mayor. He has quite a mess to clean up! All these ruins say volumes to our visitors here - we don't care and haven't for a long time and we don't have the brains or inspiration to do something about it.

Ok, off my rant. I love that building......
