Nice picture Aaron. That is not just a simple derail. My gosh there are 4-5 cars completely overturned on a straight away. Wonder what the heck happened?

The caption said a journal failed, the failed car most likely hit the tracks and tore it up at track speed, causing the rail to roll like it did. Hence, the train behind it rolled.

Otsego Paper gets a lot of those railbox cars. Hopefully they were empty and heading to Otsego and not the other way around. I didn't hear if this was a north or southbound.

GDLK has a handful of paper customers (two are through interchange). I don't know which box cars go where though.

International has a plant in Sturgis through interchange with MSO, Weyerhaueser in Three Rivers, Advanced Packaging, ARVCo, Green Bay Packaging, and couple warehouses in Kzoo, someone in Otsego as sgavan said, then PCA through interchange with MQT.

I've wondered, too, which way the train was heading. That would help us figure out if the cars were loaded or empty. And where are the engines? Returned to Kalamazoo with a partial train or trapped south of Three Rivers?

Derailment Solved
February 10, 2011 by WLKM
A flawed wheel on a railroad boxcar was pinpointed as the source of a train derailment that occurred Monday afternoon in Lockport Township. Eight cars on a 50-car Grand Elk Railroad train derailed in an area adjacent to Sauganash Country Club. The train was northbound, heading from Elkhart to Kalamazoo. Grand Elk officials said the malfunctioning wheel caused seven cars to tip over and an eighth to slip off the tracks. Workers spent Tuesday and Wednesday replacing about a mile of track that was damaged as a result of the incident. Full-scale rail service is expected to resume by the end of the week.

Maybe GDLK will repair the HBD at 25.9 just to the south of the derailment..

I think there is a place in Sturgis that receives peanut oil. It used to be a baby food plant but I think they make something else now, but still an edible product whatever it is.

Just someone that's bitter and would rather see an abandonment than have a line change hands. I think there were some anti-JAIL sentiment from the same individual.
