The Post office parking lot at Wilson St in Grandville, MI on the CSX!!! Nice searchlights too! To bad they go away next year
Episode 64, Clip 2 on my Youtube channel was filmed there, though across the ROW from the USPS. Searchlight is not visible due to the morning sun.

I'll check it out! Sounds sweet! I also love to fan up around East Lansing. Like to see CN. Never fanned CSX much. Buut hey, when you're on vacation, at the beach, and the tracks are only a walking distance from the beach, you can't beat that!MQT3001 wrote:The Post office parking lot at Wilson St in Grandville, MI on the CSX!!! Elkhart, IN, only a few miles from Michigan
Actually, I would probably have to say St. Joseph because I live nearby there and I frequently go there.
(Favorite being place most frequented)
St. Joseph also offers a variety of photo angles:

Unfortunately, most trains go through between 11pm and 8am, though sometimes coal trains, loaded or empty, go through during the daylight hours.
Durand is ok, and East Lansing gives you CN and CSX.
I fanned Wyandotte once and saw quite a few trains, so it is another good spot.

Not a whole lot of CSX left to see here in Lansing/MSU/Okemos, sadly. It's not a rust line yet, and there's even a new (replacement) defect detector at MP 79.9, but the traffic isn't even half what it was four years ago.

Durand, wish there were more trains though like it was 10 years ago
One of the things I like about Durand is there is usually another railfan or more there and they are usually freindly. Unlike that grup of unfriendly Michiganders that went to Deshler and Fostoria recently and would not talk to anyone outside their group

I'd say Plymouth/Northville/Novi but I honestly don't bother much anymore. If gas was cheaper I would start going to Allen Park much more often.

For me, there's not a better place to be than New Richmond on a warm summer morning, listening to the river trickle as it flows by and the birds singing, creating a peaceful, zen-like setting...and then a loud, obnoxious train comes through, destroying the tranquility!
Oh, and it's beautiful there in all seasons, too.

I LIKE JOE'S GIZZARD CITY IN POTTERVILLE.
I CAN SIT THERE WITH JT AND WATCH HIM GET ANNOYED AS HE HEARS TRAINS GOING BY WHILE HE DRINKS BEER AND EATS GIZZARDS.
BY THE SECOND BEER HE IS SAYING -OH WELL, THEY'LL BE MORE TRAINS ANOTHER TIME.

Grand Ledge is easiest for me on a daily basis- saw a consist coming eastbound about 9pm at Benton road last night- it was the BNSF coal train - i got ahead of it at M100 and rode beside it in GL and caught it again at Wacousta road- didnt know till Wacousta road about the pusher engines on the tail- Calumet City later said one of the pushers was broke- i was surprised to see the final engine had its high beam on and ditch lights -

I like Towas too. Problem is, there aren't many trains there. Towas reminds me of St. Joseph.J T wrote:For me, there's not a better place to be than New Richmond on a warm summer morning, listening to the river trickle as it flows by and the birds singing, creating a peaceful, zen-like setting...and then a loud, obnoxious train comes through, destroying the tranquility!

Q334, Q335, D707 (weeknights) and D708 on the days they go west. Depending on the day, might have a grain train or a coal train thrown into the mix as well.tlapteditor wrote:Grand Ledge? Owosso was pretty neat! Went there yesterday to see 765. Here's the video I shot:

Does anyone know if the Rock Island whistle was in this video?

Re: Pure Michigan: Where's Your Favorite Railfanning Spot?
I use to like Durand. I was there a couple weeks ago and saw 2 trains in like 6 hours. I use to like Plymouth. I was there not to long ago and saw no trains in 5 hours. To be honest....I don't like any railfanning spots in Michigan anymore. I have the day off of work November 4th and I'm going to Durand. I don't know why. I guess it's better then staying home.
