Im not sure if anybody has noticed or not but there is a new Hot Box Detecter on the Flint Sub in the city of Flint at mile post 270, I heard it on the scanner about a week and a half ago, And i was in Flint yesterday it is right next to the Lapeer Street grade crossing on the east side of the crossing.

Yes, there are new detectors at MP 270, MP 244 and MP 300 (ish, between Lapeer and Imlay City). If you have noticed, now there are detectors on every section of single track on the Flint sub! MP 326.0, MP 308.3, MP 300 (ish), MP 283.0, MP 257.1, MP 244.7, MP 232.0, MP 206.3.

Next time I lay over I'll post the exact locations of all the new detectors on the Flint and South Bend subs. All these new detectors suck, you'll get detectors walking over detectors

It makes it kinda difficult if you're trying to move some cars around or something. I've been trying to go to hand signals where I can all the time simply because there is too much radio traffic at time

I am pretty sure the new detectors give axle count, temperature, and defect/no defect and train speed.

New on the South Bend Sub. in my area are:

There was something posted in Railway Age last year about CN planning to install HBDs every 10-15 miles on mainlines. This would be it in action.

The New & current Hot Box Detectors on the Flint Sub are as follows:

I am sure there is a detector at 257.1. I don't know of one at 251.1 (MP 251.6 ish is the Durand diamond.)

Yes you are correct.... it is 257.1 NOT 251.1 I hate when I do that!

Are all of the new HBD's you listed in service. The only one in my area in service is 154.6 and why so many.

Thanks for the info guys, I wonder if there going to increase speeds or something with all these new detecters i wonder if a person could hear the detecter at 244.7 from the platform in Durand from there scanner that would be nice.

I have an Excel spread sheet with all the defect defect listed in in Michigan and some in Ohio and Indiana that needs to be updated , Information on new detectors would be appreciated and with accurate information I will make it available to all members of this forum. Please make the information as accurate as possible and the tenths of a mile, and the nearest crossing. I will change the format accordingly.

NS Chicago line has them spaced about ten miles apart, and in ten miles stuff can happen that may require a set out. CN''s detectors have traditionally been about thirty miles apart and I can recall at least one incident that resulted in a major derailment less less than a mile before the next detector. That makes a good case for ten mile spacing. Glad to see CN doing this.

These are the ones officially in service and are 100% accurate against a current Timetable

penn central, you CAN hear the detector at 244.7 if and only if you have a great scanner and antenna. I was just barely picking it up with my scanner while at the depot.

Thanks for the info bnsfben and GP9R, I have a pretty decent scanner i just bought a digital one from Radio Shack it cost me 500 bucks i hope it picks up the new detector i will find out the next time im down there in Durand. Thanks

Does anyone have a timetable for the South Bend Sub? It doesn't have to be current, but it'd be nice to have a better figure on milepost locations, crossovers, etc. It seems that every time I'm visiting the South Bend or Wellsboro areas, I stumble around quite a bit with the South Bend Sub.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've seen quite a few people selling GTW timetables at the train shows lately. A GTW timetable is, for the most part, system wide. It'll show you some of the South Bend sub
But from personal experience, that line is really hard to chase. It seems to be as close toto avoiding all cross roads and public access as possible from South Bend to at least Mill Creek. A Delorme Atlas might also be handy in that area
