As in the SS Badger Carferry?

The carferry should sail as usual unless the EPA kills it.

I watched it pull out of ludingtons harbor last night,it sure would be a shame to see it end.I bet that a few hundred people were out to watch it set sail.

Someone had to supply the evening comedy

Initially, I thought, since this is a RAILROAD forum, that there might be some train or something.....okay, that is dumb thinking of it now, I guess posting after 11pm isn't always a good idea.....

It's sad how the EPA is going after LMC. They're gonna kill another American company.

If the Badger dies . the EPA will have had plenty of help from Illinois senator Richard Durbin and the Mayor of Muskegon. Both have been outspoken about not giving the Badger a reprieve. What would they have said years ago when hundreds of ships on the lakes burned coal?

Just shows that the Badger "IS" taking business from the higher priced option that runs out of Muskegon.

What the EPA won't tell you:

- The mercury emmited is so small, that it'd take more than two DECADES to equal an ounce
- There are other parties who have the same permit the Badger is going after that emit many times more pollutants
- The gas savings from the shortcut instead of going through Chicago is over a million gallons worth...
- Many "oversize" loads go by way of the Badger, instead of clogging up Chicago freeways...
- The Badger directly supports 200 jobs
- Since LMC took over Badger operations in the early 1990s, the Badger has had an economic impact totalling over half a billion dollars!

Simple choice really, unless you're the "Enviornmental Protection Agency"

Keep in mind, LMC wants to convert the ship to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). The only problem is they can't possilby do it before their current permit expires 12-19-12.

Something else to keep in mind for next years sailing season. If the decision is made to convert the ship to LPG, minimum estimate for total time to convert the ship is 18 months. So much for the 2013 season. Of course I and many others hope it will be allowed to stay as is.

They've said they are a few years out for any conversion. 2015/2016ish is the general estimate.

But I guess if the EPA does not issue the permit, they'd likely fast-track the conversion and might be read for the 2015 season....

I can't believe they are so worried about this boat, I guess they have never seen what happens behind a diesel powered freighter. I watched the McKeesons (? Spelling) come in to Manistee and behind it was a mess of oil and dead fish popping up in the wake. Next thing they will go after will be the steam engines running around....although that would keep all the crazy people from driving like idiots to see a steam engine....hmmmmm....now all we need to figure out is a way to get rid of them darn heritage units.
