Hulcher is making a good bit off of Lake State as of late. Its been quite a while since I can remember any actual major track work in the area. I seem to remember tie work about 25 years ago. Short of some brush mowing, there has not been much done along there. I grew up in the subdivision just west of the latest derail. Certainly not the chessie days, thats for sure.
Re: HESR Dumps Two Cars of Corn
How does the cost of rerailing and damage, compare to the cost of maintaining and upgrading a little used line, assuming no major injuries or lawsuits. Might a small shortline consider an occasional minor derailment part of the cost of doing business?

Re: HESR Dumps Two Cars of Corn
I've wondered the same thing. Every business has a certain amount of accidents they budget for and in the railroads case I've also wondered at what point is it more cost effective to fix the track than to take a chance with derailments.hoborich wrote:How does the cost of rerailing and damage, compare to the cost of maintaining and upgrading a little used line, assuming no major injuries or lawsuits. Wouldn't be easier to open the bays on the bottom and unload them that way?
Maybe they should invest in rotary couplers.

Yeah this way does look like it's hard on the equipment, the track and the product.Jochs wrote:Wouldn't be easier to open the bays on the bottom and unload them that way?
