PM 1225 Week Two of 2013

Unread post by jkh2cpu »

He's got a highball, and he's on the way to Ashley

Image

Out in the middle of the county, I found him chugging towards Carland road. I'm on Baldwin Road

Image

Continuing the chase, I find him south of Elsie. This was the last time I saw him before he crossed M57 with me 1/2 mile to the east. If I had caught him on the other side of Elsie, I probably would have had time to catch him at the M57 crossing.

Steam engines, like any other locomotive, are not "he" or "she." They are a thing. "It." Please.

I believe the engineer was male. In literature and vernacular usage, locomotives are often referred to as having the feminine gender. Of course PM 1225 is dead iron, but as was explained to me maybe 60 years ago, a locomotive with fire in its belly needs to be treated as a lady or there will be hell to pay... Or maybe it comes from the Germanic nature of English: die Lokomotiv.

Seems to me that it is a machine and therefor a member of the feminine pronoun group...

Great photos jkh. Were you (or anyone in this forum) at Owosso a few years ago to see SP #4449 and the rest of the items on display?

Hi, Kid, and thanks. Yes, I was in Durand to see the SP 4449, NKP 765 and the others. Heh. I chased the SP 4449 from Wolf Point, MT to eastern Oregon. When I was a kid, I used to see the SP 4400s and ride behind them... It was always fun to be at the Gendale Station when they pulled in... Saw lots of Cab Forwards and other interesting stuff... They made a lasting impression.

That's awesome. I wish I could have been around in the Golden Age, when places like Durand and Lansing got like 50 or more trains a day.

I chased the Daylight from K-zoo to BC when she came in, and saw her in Owosso also. I have some nice pictures of my son (then 4 or 5) sitting at the controls doing his best impersonation of a hogger.

Nice. I didn't get to see it come in, but I saw another train (pulled by a diesel, I think) with about 20 passenger cars, with a dome-style observation car on the back with a red mars light. It was either a silver zephyr or Hiawatha.

That was 4449s train, it had an Amtrak P42 behind 4449.
