Just stumbled across this site yesterday and had a chance to chat with Zack last night. Great stuff I've seen so far! Even though I've been a railfan all my life (39 at the moment), I've spent much of that time chasing & photographing trains by myself and with no help of a scanner. So, there is MUCH I don't know about (terms, engine models, etc). So please go easy on me if I ask a question that most of you already consider common knowledge. :)

For those of you in the Grand Rapids area, I head down to Judd St. often, and I believe I saw two of you (John?) down there on Friday when the subject of my first picture rolled out of the yard.

Anyway, here is a sample of some of my recent photos, taken with a Canon 350D and either a 50mm 1.4 or 17-40L lens.

1. Thornapple trestle

2. Another one

3. Pere Marquette crossing Rabbit River trestle in New Richmond

4. Pere Marquette just north of New Richmond

5. MMRR & GRE just north of West Olive

6. CSX coal just north of Holland

Thanks, Matt. Hopefully I can find a decent scanner soon and actually start planning my shots more carefully. It's just dumb luck right now, being in the right place at the right time (except for the Amtrak shots). :D

I prefer to shoot AWAY from the city as much as I can. I'd rather be out in the country shooting in remote locations, as I'm a landscape photographer by hobby. I guess combining the two is somewhat of my goal. I'm quite partial to trestle shots as well.

While I am by no means a profotinal (sorry I must appolige again as I cant spell verry good) photographer, but I think city scens can be just as good. Just dont over look them. I really like Mr. Chicago4900's photos in downtown Chicago. Somthing about all the buildings, with the little trains in them. But then again I am partial to Chicago, so mabey im just buyest. Well welcome aboard and I look forward to more.

And of course, welcome to Zack's 24-7 frat party, JT, I look forward to seeing more pic's, and if you need anyhelp with locomotive model designations, let me know!

I agree with Scooterb. This is a very friendly board. Maybe it is because there are no politics discussed here.

Oh, I'm sure of it, but I guess with my landscape photography frame of mind, the thought of finding remote locations to shoot that no one has ever seen before appeals to me more. It's the fun of the hunt, I guess. Don't get me wrong, I think there are some fantastic city shots, and I've already seen many on here, so I'm sure I'll be adding to that subject matter as well.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. :D

Alright, I suppose that's it for now. I have a few more, but don't want to overdo my introduction. :)

Are pictures normally posted in this part of the forum, or is there an area more preferred for it?

You definitely know what you are doing with a camera. These photos are some of the best photos (trains or otherwise) that I have ever seen. The colors are so true and bright. Photos are really clear and focused. Please add more of them when you have time. Awesome. Ron

Thanks, Ron. Unfortunately I don't have much more. I'd love to spend every day out shooting (preferably out west in the mountains...something I've never done before and can only dream about at this time), but I'm rarely able to make the time. I know having a scanner could greatly increase my odds at being in the right place at the right time and help me save a lot of time as well, so that is a purchase that is definitely in the near future for me.

Trust me...when I can, I WILL be shooting some more (and as much as I can!)

:D

You've got some great pictures! Is that silver Mazda yours? I've seen you around if it is. Hope to meet you at the yard someday.

Yes, that is mine. Were you at Judd St. on Friday when I pulled in there for a minute before BNSF 5967 pulled out of there? I told Zack I was there and saw a couple of guys, one with a scanner and he said it was probably John. Is that you?

Ok, two more shots. I'm sharing these because I saw Zack had posted one of his own in another thread. This is the swing bridge trestle over the Grand River just north of the Wyoming yard. These were taken last January after a very wet and sticky snowfall the night before. The morning started cloudy, but the sun came out and the sky cleared about 20 mintues before I took these. Talk about great timing! Sometimes I run into the best of luck. However, my timing was about 30 years off when it comes to catching a train on these trestles!

These bridges have some nice history to them, and there is a plaque on the main one with a description of when it was built, put into service, taken out of service, etc. I can't remember the details right now, but I THINK it was around 1978 when the last train crossed them.

Anyway, I would have LOVED to have seen this swing bridge in operation when the riverboats cruised the Grand back in the early 1900's.

Image

Hey Zack, when you took your photo, did you cross the bridge and see the older, wooden trestle to the north in the woods? It's still there and quite a nice find in the summer when it's all grown over. This one isn't crossing the river, but rather the swampy area below. It looks like a river flowing under, but you can actually walk that area in the summer when it's dried up.
