More Transformers Needed

Unread post by James Sofonia »

This past week Cosumers power completly tore out a sub-station in Traverse City on Four Mile Rd. They are now pouring huge footings for something really big. This is right next to the GLC Williamsburg main. I'm guessing the possibility that new transformers will be delivered by rail.

They had dug very deep foundations and maybe had to pump out the ground water. Grand Traverse Bay is just a few hundred feet behind me and the site is just 4 to 5' in elevation above the water line.

Should have stopped and asked them what's planned? And bring them a cup of coffee from Speedway down the road. :)

There is another transformer sitting in Durand right now that will come back to Owosso tonight when GLC returns from Osmer. It is not like the ones brought up on Sunday, but is just like some that they have hauled before. It is on a depressed center car. Should go north to Cadillac tomorrow morning.

Update on the new sub-station in TC:
They have now brought in the steel framing, fencing, and many insulators, but no transformers yet.
Somebody give a heads up if you see them on a train somewhere.

Standard operating procedure in any transformer yard where you are dealing with water. There is potential for contamination in the groundwater. it is containerized until sampling determines it is clean. If it is not clean it will be hauled to a treatment facility where the water is properly cleaned

Update on the Traverse City new sub station: Just one transformer showed up, I didn't see it come in but it's not that big as transformers go so probably by truck, also no one reported seeing a transformer on a train headed this way. However the day after they set it in place I saw many equipment tracks in the snow between the rails and the sub station. Hmmnn...
