Today, I spotted that the NS, had dropped off a set of them new fancy diamonds that ride over and under each other. I wonder who will be on top

Why does it matter?

I would think that the fastest trains would have the priority, so wouldn't NS be on top? Not really sure how exactly these new ones work, but pretty much, I've never really seen CSX go faster than about 20-25, where as NS hauls ass one after another.

That does make sense. Last year CSX was spotted doing XXmph through there at night. :o -Chris

Admin edit: chris, we've talked about posting what speeds you think the railroads are doing...don't post that stuff.

The maxium speed on that line is 40mph chris, all CSX tracks in michigan are rated at 40mph or below except where Amtrak Runs by Grand Rapids.

Boy Mike, dont know where you got that stuff, but Max speed from Carleton south is 45, Plymouth to Detroit is 45, Lincoln Sec is 49. And I rotunely go south on #1 at 40 MPH across the diamond.

Are you so sure about that, Mike? I swear I've seen either 50 or 55 markers along the line between GR and Holland.

I was told by someone reputable that it was 40max, and that they downgraded to 40 to save money. I actually think you told me that matt, was it recently uped with the track maintence they did this summer?

From what I can gather, GR to Porter is 55-60 (at the most) for freight, 60-65 for Amtrak. GR to Plymouth is 40 max, since there's no Amtrak, CSX isn't obligated to maintain it to higher standards.

No that has been the max speed all the time. It was 50 Saginaw to Carleton, Carleton to Walbridge was 45, and Plymouth to Detroit was 45. Only thing that has changed is Flint to Carleton is now 40. The 40 on the Plymouth sub happened a few years ago.

hey matt

did'nt CSX put a speed of 40 mph, on all diamonds???
the diamonds at walkerton and wellsboro ind. have 40 for a long time, and at walkerton with the new "up and over" diamonds the speed has not increased...

I dont know, about that one, they may have. All the diamonds over here have speed limits on them, except one and that was Romulis. South Kersley 35 due to that being max speed in Flint. Holly 15, due to curves in town. Plymouth is 30 due to speed in town. Wayne is 30 now. Romulis is 40 now only because of the rest of the sub droping down to 40. Carletion is 35 due to town. Alexis is 30. GTW is 20. Ironville is 20. Vickers is 30 due to Max speed. I can say that most if not all the diamonds that we cross ran by another railroad, appear (looks) to be faster then most of our limits.

You sure about that, rob? So, hypothetically, if I paced them one day going 80 south of Holland, then they were going well beyond their speed limit?[/quote]

yes i sure that is what the timetable saids that csx gave me to read when they put me through engineer school. Rob

There is absolutely no excuse for speeding when operating a train. Maybe less the 5mph over is excuseable for the first offense. But after that its 30 days off w/o pay. As far as 10 over well that like Dok results in instant termination. And if there's an accident involving a train going that much over the speed limit, dare I say possible criminal charges for the engineer involved! A train is not like going over the speed limit on the highway.

I need to have my speedo checked then...hypothetically.
