Searching for RR Fossils in South Dakota

Unread post by Larry G »

Dakota Southern operates the former CMSP&P grade between Mitchell and Chamberlain. Dakota Southern is storing coil cars and hoppers on its line. White Lake, Kimball, and Chamberlain sidings are full of them.

West of Chamberlain the trackage is not operated but railbanked by the state of South Dakota for future use if needed. Check out Vivian, Okaton, and Kodoka views in this album.

West of Kadoka the rails are removed for about 70 miles until just about 5 miles east of Rapid City.

Coil cars plug the old elevator siding at Kimball, SD looking west down the Dakota Southern (exCMSP&P) towards Chamberlain and Rapid City.

I thought they were going to resume service west of Chamberlain a couple years ago? Ran at least a couple trains. What happened?

IIRC a proposed ethanol plant was cancelled...much like what happened in Ithaca and McBain.

Added a few more pics of the old CMSP&P Line between Rapid City and Caputa, SD today. Rails remain on the grade between RC and Caputa, almost 15 miles east of RC before the long gap to Kadoka on the other side of the Badlands National Park. Plans were once afoot to make a rapid rail connection to the RC airport using this grade. Plans are in limbo at this point. It was aboout 27 years ago that the last Milwaukee freight left Rapid City east bound.
