Chasing Trains in Southern Ohio - 10/9/11

Unread post by B-Town »

Geoff and I began yesterday's railfanning journey sitting on the south end of Watkins Yard at Valley Crossing. We stuck around there for a while, but soon heard a CSX train call off "east" on the Northern Subdivision. The chase began! We started heading south and by the time we reached Rohr Road, we were ahead of it. We continued south, past Circleville, Ohio to the Pickaway and Ross County line. Here we set up and shot CSX E441 passing under the overpass. To the right is US Route 23.

We continued south and were able to catch it on a wooden farm bridge near Waverly.

We quickly departed and continued the chase. We caught it again at Stockdale.

The next stop was at Milepost 55 where a killer C&O signal bridge still stands!

The train soon stopped to allow a signal maintainer to finish working farther down the line. This gave us a great chance to get a lot of shots, including a pretty cool portrait of the conductor.

...Lots of photos from that spot! :)

After having a short conversation with the train's crew, it had to depart, so Geoff and I caught it for the last time at the Scioto River trestle.

After that we found ourselves driving aimlessly, looking for an NS train. We found one, but when it reached us, it wasn't in a well-lit location...So here's a backlit shot of NS 61J.

We ventured back into Portsmouth to photograph 61J sitting in better light at the yard.

Below the overpass sat a loaded coal train. That's still 61J in the background, too.

Unfortunately, we stuck around at the yard for too long, causing us to miss 218 which Geoff wanted to shoot at Spring Lane. We searched around that area, trying to find a spot to shoot the 194, which was close behind 218. Another fail! We ended up at a poorly lit place, making us have to rush back to the westbound-facing signals in a jiffy!

We started back to Columbus, but before we could, we had to catch 234 in Lucasville, speeding through in the day's last light.

We were still trying to get back to Columbus when we noticed a clear signal back on the Northern Sub, while approaching Circleville. By now, it was dark out and a long exposure was in order.

If you've made it this far in this report I wanted to thank you for reading and checking out the photos!
