My First Good Snow Shots of the Year 1/2/12

Unread post by B-Town »

After dropping my brother off at OSU, I managed to convince my dad to go train watching with me at Flint along the Sandusky District. Once we arrived there, I noticed a westbound was lined through the intermediate signal. I turned on the laptop, fired up the ATCS Monitor, and it showed the train was already close to the Worthington diamond. The train ended up being loaded coal train number 866 with a former Conrail Dash 8-40CW leading the way.

Next up was another NS westbound, which was lined up directly behind 866. It was steel coil train 62T and it had a single SD40-2 leading the train. The snow was falling pretty hard at this point, which made for a cool shot.

CSX E812 was lined through the Worthington Diamond right after 62T and came through no more than five minutes after it. I shot it at the Milepost 127 signals.

It took a while, but after the wait, NS sent through 379, which I shot with my super wide-angle lens.

379 met 170 near Cooke Road and that train soon came through Flint with a pair of SD60’s up front.

By now, my dad and I were frozen, so we decided to leave.

Nice collection, Brandon. Do you do any wide angle distortion correction? The reason I ask is because in the last shot, the train looks a little squashed. That's a typical side effect when doing perspective correction, and the way to offset that is to stretch the image upward or downward to return the subject to its original height.

GRHC - you know every night I can imagine he is in front of his computer screen sitting in his underwear swearing profusely and drinking Blatz beer combing the RailRoadFan website for grammatical errors.

Thanks JT!

Yes, I sometimes correct distortion...BUT I like to leave some distortion because I like the dramatic feeling it gives.
