89 trains is not bad, but I know the total can reach 100.

I know I am missing several scheduled trains. If I would have arrived 20 or so minutes earlier I would've caught trailer trains 22W and 20W. They must have been running early and of course they are running later than that the previous evening. Figures I miss 2 of my favorite trains. 22W showed up 9:31 Sat. night and I think 20W was right behind him. And there are several WB intermodals that I never saw either. 21Z shouldve been by sometime after 5pm, but it has a tendency to be late. 25K I saw at 9:48. But I never saw 21G or 23N. So that is 6 Intermodals that shoud've been by that weren't. There are a few freights too that I never saw - 30Q and 324 (they still run that?). I really didnt see as many coal trains as usual either.

I had an awesome time and will be heading back next weekend. The second crossing just east of the junction is closed right now. They are working on the tracks. It made for a wonderful night though, nice and peaceful.

And does anybody know exactly what is going on with all the trackwork there? New signals are in place everywhere, but not yet activated, including a new one on the siding track for WB's. They have new switches sitting alongside the tracks. Surely they will be doing some reconfiguring, but does anybody know what it will look like?

I know my notes are a little weird, but this is the stuff I like to record. Sorry, engine #s and models are too much to write down, and I currently have no cameras.

Well thats it everybody. Please comment and let me know what I am doing wrong.

There ya go, fixed it a bit for ya. To make a list like that, just before your information you are copying from Excel, hit the code button...then at the end of your pasted info, hit the code button again to close it.

It'll look like this:

Code: Select all
Time Direction Railroad Train Notes
20:57 E AMTK 30
21:25 W CP 23T
thanks for the report t.winx I was curious what the daily traffic is and now I know. I was there briefly in August and caught a few NS East and Westbounds but was wondering about all the work going on there also. New signals were about to be put in when I was there.

30Q still runs but now its only Chicago-Elkhart.
23N is onduty out of Toledo at 600am, doesn't run Sundays.

Most of the switches on the Chicago line were/are being replaced this year, also quite a few road crossing are being replaced. Off had afew are switches are 340-342 363-364 (Dekalb) 367 395, 397 421.

Thanks for the comments and info guys.

A few more questions since you guys seem to know what your talking about: which yard does 30Q come from? I noticed 10R and 31K dont always use the Porter branch. Is this only because of capacity constraints on the line? And does 24Z run anymore? on any days? ( I thought I heard it on a Wednesday in August) And 21W?

It is regularly on duty at 6? And doesnt it originate in Columbus?

Do all the stack trains have regular schedules too? Some, like 24W and 20N dont seem to show up on the same days all the time. Am I just missing them?

One more question now that I am thinking of Columbus. Is NS ever going to load trailers there? And are the few domestic stacks I see on 23N the only ones they are lifting there? It seems like they could/should be lifting some high priority traffic.

Thanks again guys

Using the branch is prefered but the two considerations is capacity and if the crew is qualified.

23N originates at Rickenbacher intermodal facility.

Most of the van/stack trains are in "assigned" service meaning you are on duty at the same time in Toledo and Chicago. Then off a day after you get back to Toledo. Now that being said even though you may be on duty at 6am that don't mean your train will always be there at that time.

Last week 21M which is normally a wee hour of the am train didn't leave Toledo till after 9am due to hitting a car in Sandusky. The assigned crew from Toledo to Chicago finally got deadheaded at 830am after being on duty since 130am.

30Q shows out of Calumet. 24Z, 21W no longer run these were combined into other trains.

By the way recently the 23N O/D at Toledo was moved up to 4am, the Toledo-Bellevue crew is on duty at 1230a to go and get it from the columbus crew.

20N is on duty at 1230pm don't run Fridays. 24W is onduty at 1000am and runs daily, both in chicago, now by no means does that mean thats when we start pulling out. It normally takes a few hours to leave Chicago as a ball park you could figure 4 hours before you get to go.

Many thanks esprrfan. You must work for NS eh? some sort of manager?

Thats interesting how those assigned crews work. It really demands a scheduled railroad. The CN is usually pretty regular too with their road freights, but crews just work a pool time, working whatever is available during their window. The locals are assigned though.

I'm curious. Are the hotshots like 21E pretty high on the seniority list? I suppose that since it leaves Toledo midnightish that it isnt as high as a 21Z, but you know what I am saying. Sounds like my dream job to have a regular conductor job on a hotshot. And I am getting this right that the crew is on 2 days then off one? Sheesh! Sounds nice. Sounds real nice.

Did you not see my question about Rickenbacker?

I could really ask you a lot of questions, if you don't mind. It seems there are so few NS guys that roam the RR forums compared to BNSF. And there are no kids of NS employees either, and so many for BNSF. Now why is that?

Thanks for helping me out man. I really appreciate it.

21E is one of the few thats not assigned and actually it's one of the hottest trains it just goes through, it's all blocked for San Bernardino and L.A.. It don't even go into the NS yards in Chicago. At Ashland a Chicago crew runs it over to Willow Springs to the BNSF and on the way west.

21G is another that goes right to the BNSF.

and nooooooo I'm no offical

So you do work for NS then? I just saw your sig that you got record bonuses and I automatically assumed management. But now that I think about it, my pa gets profit sharing and he is just an engineer.

I knew 21G ran straight through to BNSF, but I thought 21E just terminated at Willow Springs. Sorry, but do you mean 21M? I know 21W used to be the run through to BNSF for train ZNYCLAC, but someone I know said 21M handles that business now. 21E is an all UPS train and San Bernadino doesn't usually handle UPS traffic, I am sure of that (BNSF used to be my specialty :) ) The ZNYCLAC train leaves late morning from Willow Springs and doesnt usually carry a whole lot of UPS trailers, certainly not the 70+ that I see on 21E.

Am I wrong? If not, I give you permision to slap me. Hehe
