An Afternoon in Marion, OH - 7/12/10

A friend and I were chatting on AIM early this morning and he was listening to his scanner and told me that Q-106 had a KCS Southern Belle "Thundercab" leading. And since I had today off, I headed to Marion to hopefully get it returning on tonight's Q-107.

As it turns out, Q-106 ran with two Southern Belle "Thundercabs" elephant-style. However, it was an unusually busy afternoon at Marion.

Here is a list of trains I saw in no particular order:

Q-364
N-824
G-884
K-002
E-494
170
Q-637
Q-636
304
416
L38
L39
Q-366
L-279
379
Q-107
Q-348

I also heard 218 and 18M on the drive up but did not see them, as well as the C-799 heading out of town as I was leaving. Q-358 was incoming as well.

And yes, I did see and record high definition video of Q-107, lead by KCS 4115.

Not too bad for a Monday afternoon at a place that supposedly gets no trains.

The drive's easy for me -- I live in Columbus! Although that means I'm three hours from Deshler and Fostoria, and two hours from Attica, Williard and Greenwich, but them's the breaks.

I forgot to add NS 170 (whom kept calling himself a westbound). It had a Rent-a-Wreck trailing an NS "Catfish".

And Q-364 had CSX 8886 trailing and running (for a short time) on home rails. Looked good in YN3 even though the horn got swapped.

Trains on the NS Columbus line are westbounds and eastbounds. It was an N&W thing. Anything traveling in a direction remotely towards Roanoke was an eastbound, and anything traveling away would be a westbound.

I go by the even-numbered symbol = eastbound, odd-numbered symbol = westbound thing. Besides, 170 runs from Chattanooga to Conway, which is remotely eastbound. But I guess on the north-south lines in the east-west corridors north = west and south = east (makes sense).

And like my signature says, there are no northbounds or southbounds in Marion. Yes, they did when the Pennsy was in town, but they did everything all bass-ackwards.

Here is the video I shot of 107, prettied up for streaming on the interweb, from the gravel lot of the wildlife preserve between Marion and New Bloomington.
