Record Setting Day in Goshen

Unread post by t.winx »

Caught a record 89 trains in 24 hours in Goshen on from 9am Thursday the 15th till 9am the 16th. Busiest I've ever had in my 3 years of 24 hour counts in this city was 84 back in 2007. Catching 89 was incredible! But many of the trains we're doubles. Amtrak's 29 and 49 were seen and counted twice, as were symbols 16E, 18M, 13Q, 15N, 19A, 311, 175, 23M and 23Z. I guess they were just running late, though it was odd seeing 2 175's head out of Elkhart only 10 hours apart. Minus those 11 doubles and we get a good 78 trains, but that is without a few symbols such as 18A, 20N, 24W (not sure how often these run anymore) and CP 33T. And does 16N ever run anymore?

15 of the 89 were Marion Branch trains, and I expect this to be even higher the next time I visit late next month. I hear a 366 is running now. 12K and 13K are regular evening trains, but 12K was only 19 cars.

20K is now running around 5pm and a 24N is carrying the Toledo traffic. 20W is not restricted to Fri-Mon anymore, but it isn't the big pig train it is like on those days. The intermodals don't seem as hard core on-time as they used to. Lately the EB fleet in the evenings have been late, and the morning van trains as well, but maybe I'm just showing up on the wrong days. The pigs looked good and there was even a some interesting trucking companies such as Zimmerman, RL, Lightning and Keystone on the rails. Thats fun to see.

Here's the count. I fell asleep 330-500 :( I added a 21E and 359 in there cuz I figured they went by, and I very well could have missed a few more such as 18A and 33T and other extras.

Nice report.

Correct, 16N and 24W are gone.

The vans aren't late. Their times have been adjusted for some reason and I've noticed most eastbounds except 22K and 206 have later departure times.

Not correct 24W still runs...16N is gone

20K and 24Z have new call times

22K, 206, 24M, 20E, 20Q, 22W, 26T, and 20R all normal times

20W is called whenever BNSF delivers traffic

When does 24W run? Not Friday or Saturday for sure.

I don't understand 20R either. He's of late been running a lot later, such as near 11 am through Oak Harbor, at least on 3 separate occassions. Do you have info on the Detroit stuff, like 20V and 227? Thanks.

That's because 20R now works Toledo and has to wait for 23N to make a set off at Mega for the R to pick up. Often the R is held out west of Toledo if the 23N hasn't come into town yet.

24W is "suppose" to run daily except Saturday. However if it's short on tonnage, power or late connections the Cleveland's will just be put on like the 24Z and the W won't run that day.

Plus the "doubles" should count unless it was the "SAME" train such as power & cars. Like the 175 you pointed out 10 hours apart I'm sure one was 175 of the 15th and the second being 175 of the 16th, two different trains.

Ok now I dont know the NS worth crap except for a few trains, but a westbound sets off for a eastbound to pick up? Is it traffic from the east that heads south?

No, the 23N brings up a block for ERail out of Columbus Oh that the 20R picks up to take east. But hey Matt you know how RR's think, at the point when they had quit running 21N out of Detroit to Chicago those Chicago stacks were taken to Cleveland on the 20V to be picked up and taken to Chicago on the 21V. Never understood that move

Oh I used to see that move all the time. 20V would bring the Chicago DS's down to Fairlane and later on 21V would come by and pick them up to Chicago. You're right, that's a heck of a detour!
