Ep. 448: Chicago Line Evening: Trains of New Carlisle, IN

July 1, 2015: New Carlisle, IN -- At CP 448 on the NS Chicago Line, not only do you get the seemingly endless trains of the Waterlevel route, but the South Shore Electric Commuter and freight trains as well.

Spend one evening hour at New Carlisle, where the CSS and NS produce 9 trains in just over 60 minutes! From electric commuter trains, to manifests, autoracks and hot intermodals - we even capture Amtrak #30 under the lights.

The scene here is marked by the massive Gavilon Grain elevator, plus the IN Tek and Kote steel plant. After the sun sets, they provide plenty of ambient light to watch trains with, including some neat glint effects.

Viewers should note, train #6 goes into emergency right after passing us, due to a signal acting erratically ahead. After the oil train clears, Chicago East halted westbounds to run Amtrak's #30 and #48, the former already late, around the scene.

The 8th freight was already ahead of Amtrak, hence they're first to cross over to #1 to get around the stalled manifest. Thankfully a maintainer was quickly on scene and had the issue fixed in about 10 minutes, so after Amtrak #30 everything went back to normal as night settled in.

Yeah, both the Grain Elevator and the steel plant actually have power switches and their own switching locomotives.
