West Olive Coal!

Unread post by justin_gram »

Some videos put together from the last 1/2 year (about) of coal trains in St. Joe and Stevensville. Taken on both Nikon and GoPro.

Around The Town: BNSF Coal Trains on the CSX

For coal plants to be able to make power, they need coal, and lots of it. For example, the Consumers Energy JH Campbell generating plant in West Olive, MI takes one of these 130 car coal train a day, and sometimes another! Not only a train eastbound to the plant, but the trains have to come back westbound each day empty, too. These massive 18,000 ton trains take two locomotives to power, all the way from the Powder River Basin to West Olive, Michigan, except for a large grade about 50 miles north (railroad east) of St. Joseph when an extra two locomotives have to help push it up the Saugatuck Hill.

All of these videos were taken in St. Joseph, Michigan, or in the near surrounding towns, all along the CSX Grand Rapids Subdivision.
