You buy a better camera, a scanner, and put 30,000 miles on your car in one year of chasing trains.

You plan your family vacation and hotel stays around what yards, busy lines, tourist trains & rail museums you can check out on the way there and back.

You live a few miles from a line, and you can tell which way a train is headed by the horn sequences for the crossings.

You've been sitting in your car next to a green absolute for over an hour with your wife and you look at her and say, "Just five more minutes...I know it'll be here in just five more minutes."

If you're with a friend and a train goes and they ask you about it, you can name the locomotives up front, the approximate date when they were built, what company owns them, the train symbol, it's point of origin, it's destination and it's stops along the way.

   Did that last summer while getting eaten up by mosquitos. "Honey, I know the Amtrak is coming ANY minute now!" (my gf can be so patient with me sometimes) This was before I knew about Julie, though.

.... If you go railfanning in Ohio with two friends and its 5 degrees out w/ a wind chill of -25. Ask Matt and PAtrick about that. IT'S KOLD!!!
Rule #1: BerkshireKid is God. Rule #2: God is always right. Rule #3: If you think you may actually be right refer to Rules #1 & #2.

If all you can think about in school or on the street is trains.
If your mom wonders how fast you pace the train on chicago dr and you say,"They have the same speed limit as we do."
If you are a member of this site. :P
Lastly, JONS and JT will get this, If you pull a U-Turn to catch a couple of railfans :)

You might be a railfan if:

1. You hear a horn of a train and run outside with your camera not realizing its 15 below outside.

2. Half of your wardrobe is railroad t-shirts and hats.

3. Everytime you get to talk to someone the instant they mention trains you tell them about your adventures, what you saw and how many cars you counted on every train.
