On the flip side, why don't you show us why you're right? Why the Moon Landings have been the end all, be all of Human existence?

The nice thing about philosophical arguments is that as long as you backup what you believe, there is no right or wrong answer.

I knew someone would pick that up.

The Moon landings because, but not limited to: scientific, engineering, & communication advancements (what we'd learned) coupled with the amazing attributes of humans (who we are) allowed us to travel to a new world.

The biggest reason I think the moon landing it is mankind's great accomplishment is that that "one giant leap..." was the first step into the final frontier, space. We actually left our planet, that has been the home to mankind since the first peoples walked upright 5+ million year ago in east Africa, and stepped foot onto another celestial object. Neil Armstrong will be talked about in generations to come just like we talk about Columbus, Magellan and the great explorers of the past. The technology and science that got us to the moon has not been lost. We just need the right reason to go back. Hopefully that will happen yet in my lifetime.

We realized it was a big empty rock that we had basically learned everything we could from and it was ridiculously expensive to get to.

Not really all that surprising.
So how do you explain the mars landing?

Sending robots is tons cheaper then sending humans. No pesky life support and supplies to worry about and more importantly no dead weight of a human to worry about.

Just a point of contention, I never ever ever ever said the moon landing was the pinnacle of human achievement, talk about mis quoted!

Really I would have to agree with MDH.
