I'm still mourning over F15's being replaced by F22's. Granted, the F22 is phenominal :!: But I still recall watching an F15 go from a standing position on a runway to 50,000' in less than a minute  It was totally awesome :!: :!: :!:

The F14 didn't have a long life span it seems. It seems as quick as it replaced the F4/A4/A7 it was replaced by the FA18.

It's a good thing the military is supported by tax dollars. I'd hate to see the shape they'd be in if they had to raise their own capital to buy new planes at the rate their "current" ones become obsolete...

Somehow I feel this ones headed for the Political area.

The "MUSLUM REBELS" [sic] were actually "freedom fighters" fighting the leftist "pro soviet" regime, they were also know as the mujahideen...they later became the Taliban and our friends' AL-Qaeda, and we fully supported/funded/trained them.

Jimmy Carters administration actually started the program, but kept it to a minimum of harassment with light arms. Regan kicked it up and eventually gave them the Stinger shoulder fired ground to air missile, this removed the Air Superiority from the Soviets and made them put boots on the ground, we all know what happens when invaders try to hold ground in mountainous central Asia.

If I recall the reason Regan stepped it up was they knew the Soviets were in trouble at home with money and they knew their doctrine in Afghanistan was fully dependent on Air Superiority, they also got the 'freedom fighters' to conduct raids inside the Soviet Union, very aggressive. We also funded.....this is funny....A Koran-smuggling program to help moral and gain support of the general population to support the 'freedom fighters'.

Sometimes things really do go full circle.

The Hinds were/are excellent machines, powerful for ground support/anti armor and they actually had limited air to air capabilities. In a pinch they can haul a few troops as well. For as much hype against Soviet weapons, they really have us beat in a lot of things, and lately they can fund more and are not dependent on outside energy. (even though they need to sell a lot of energy for their economy). I would be worried if I had to face their S-300 (We call it the SA-10) if I was flying plane in combat against it.

Imagine if the Soviets did to us in the ME now as we did to them in the 80's. A simple shoulder fired missile could radically change the scope of two wars overnight.

I'd rather we get Russia before they get us. 8)
