Someone screwed up in the control room. They'd just gone to a 5-second delay, but someone forgot to push the magic button.....it was disturbing, to say the least. It was some fool in the control room's fault, not Shepherd Smith.

How is it any worse than the BS NBC, CBS, CNN and ABC shove down our throats?

Yes, but Smith is the face the public sees. It may not be his fault directly, but because he's the guy people associate with the station, he's not only the the first face the public will see after a serious blunder like this, he's also the guy people watching the station trust and thus the best guy (in the moments immediately following the blunder) to explain what happened, apologize and do as much damage control as possible as quickly as possible following the incident.

Shepherd Smith?

"Live" news is often on delay, and it's a rarity that they use the feature to stop coverage. The simple fact is he saw someone commit suicide knowing it was going to be beamed to millions in seconds if not stopped - so he said something, albeit rather unusual.

There have been many Live events like this with something distuturbing covered live. Many were car chases. People get rammed head-on in a 100+ MPH collision....people get thrown from vehicles....etc. The only reason this gets as much coverage from the "mainstream media" is the fact that it's Fox.

In other news, I think Iranian State telivisons' mess up today was worse....they quoted a article from "The Onion":

Same thing happened on live TV back in the 1980s with Bud Dwyer.

I've seen more disturbing and graphic images in movies and video games. Is it because its real is that what makes it 'disturbing'?

Who cares? We've all seen Kennedy get his head blown off. Not to mention Lee Harvey Oswald.

Life (and death) happens.

About 10 years ago the History Channel got in trouble for showing JFK's autopsy photographs on a program without a rating (TV-PG, TV-14, etc.). From a person who has a rather high tolerance of stuff like that, those photographs do not need to be shown on television. Now it seems any show about the Kennedy assassination comes with some sort of "viewer discretion advised" warning.
