Jon Hall is excluded from the guessing. :-)

This is something I stumbled upon today...it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

That's the old coaling tower just west of Augusta.

Oh, I should have excluded all railroad engineers as well.

Do you know any history of that tower? Build date, etc.

I'd have to take a look at the date inscribed on the structure itself next time I go by there. Was built by Fairbanks-Morse, I believe. If I could find one of our old "Crossties" company magazines the Editor did an article on that tower. I'll see if I can email him and if he can recall it. He's retired now.

Thanks. I love coming across old structures like that and I'm always interested in the history of them. Not too many left standing in Michigan, no? Aside from that one, the tower in Lansing over the CN line and the one near Michigan City, I'm not really familiar with any others. I'm sure you've seen a few in your travels. How about in the Detroit area?

Are you referring to the one at New Buffalo?

Oh yeah, forgot about that one. The one near Michigan city is right by a curve in the tracks where they run parallel with highway 12.

And despite seeing the one in Michigan City so clearly, somehow I forgot about that one...

Looking East towards Augusta, MI, the coal tower cant be seen unless you are looking for it, and for me going East on M-96, my eyes are glued to the NS line. The Tower is about 1/2 mile -1 mile outside of town (to the West), and is hard to spot cuz' the road goes NE and the tracks remain going East, and its pops up on ya sooooo its a hike,

JT you really wanted to explore this dident ya!

The coal tower at Saginaw Yard is still there, but my favorite coal tower is at Dekalb, Illinois along the CNW Mainline.
