The gray building behind the Chessie boxcars was a C&O warehouse leased by Van's Delivery service. It was full of East Jordan Ironworks castings when it burned to the ground. Don't recall what year. Rail dock on one side, truck docks to Market St on the street side.

Re: Before/After Grand Rapids interurban area
I LOVE the before and after. That's awesome, thanks!
I always like to see the then and now. I think that's the best way to present something. It's much easier to see where it was. Like fuller Jct, the old pictures are awesome, but I just can't place them. Here, I know exactly where that's at.
Thanks!

Great pics!
Is that looking west from 131 in Grand Rapids?
Were those yellow Chessie boxcars insulated or reefers? I've never seen that scheme.

Re: Before/After Grand Rapids interurban area
It's actually about 1/2 mile west of US-131 in GR looking west. This is from the old interurban bridge that crosses the CSX line and the Grand River on this map: http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v ... &encType=1Ben Higdon wrote:Great pics!

The yellow boxcars were insulated boxes.

Nice! What I wouldn't give to see a Chessie painted GP-30 in service today!

Re: Before/After Grand Rapids interurban area
All C&O GP30s were delivered like that with a five chime horn. It was actually a three chime on one side and two chime on the other side of the cab top as all five bells could not fit on one side. Other railroads (ie B&O, PRR, ATSF) only ordered their units with a three chime placed on the engineer's side cab roof, while others (ie NW, SOU, SBD) had five chimes mounted in the center-front of the cab roof. CP had their horns mounted on the long hood.

Reminds me of the EL SD45 horn configurations...Mr. Tops wrote:All C&O GP30s were delivered like that with a five chime horn. Re: Before/After Grand Rapids interurban area
Addaitionaly on the C&O GP30's, depending on the order, the bells on the firemans' side would be either both facing forward or one forward and one rearward.
