Old railfanning videos from MI, IN, and more!

Unread post by tsinoms »

Been meaning to make this post here for a bit but got lazy with it and also a tad lost in the content.
Happened to be scrolling YT one day and noticed a video in my recommended that had stuff from around Muskegon and Grand Rapids from 1988! What really caught my eye was footage of what I would believe is the CMGN using a leased GP9 on the Muskegon to Walker line. To my knowledge there isn't much video of that line so I was instantly hooked. Channel name is Railfan Coast to Coast and he has a lot of stuff from the 90's and is currently up to 2006 or so from Chesterton, Pine, Willow Creek, Grand Rapids, and even more from around Muskegon. He also has current stuff from his adventures around! Highly recommended especially for us veterans of rrfan to see some trains we used to post about!
Here is that video from 1988 for those interested: https://youtu.be/5GCq4l3EK-M
Here is another from 2005 showing the end of CSX in Muskegon and the arrival of GRE 3839 to the MS: https://youtu.be/t4UNHjdj14c

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!
Following that I saw a recommendation for another channel that had about the same content. This one hit a bit closer to home as the Trussell Brothers make a surprise appearance! I remember this trip as the coal train coming down the CSX onto the NS had been holding out at the usual spot near the Speedway in Porter. We happened to walk over and talk with the conductor who invited us up to check out a brand new ES44DC. We then spent the rest of the evening watching a few trains before heading back to grandmas. Anyways, the channel name is Matt's Train Videos and More. He has stuff stating back in the late 90's and has stuff as current as 2011. Also included is stuff from where he currently lives near Phoenix AZ on the UP. Check his stuff out as well!
Video I have chosen is from 2007 and has stuff from Holland, GR, and Chesterton, IN. It also has an appearance from one of ~Z~'s favorite engineers "Reflecto" at 34:45 into the video: https://youtu.be/d15mADWFkbY

Thank you all for taking the time to travel back in time with me and be able to relive what railfanning up here used to be like. I leave you with a screen grab from Matt of the Trussell Brothers in Porter. Enjoy!

This is my life. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

If this is a problem get used to it.

Nice collection of older videos there Trussell Jr.
In case anyone wants to see more old videos of Trussell Sr, here's one of him yelling about salami in Chesterton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cLZ_JEfB14

Thank you for sharing and let’s not forget about RailRoadFan.com board members Dan Cluley and Steamlogger. They both have YouTube channels that feature trains filmed in the late 80s early 90s in and around West Michigan. I have included links to both YouTube channels. You can view them by clicking on the links provided below.

Add to this list, The Kim Powell collection. Kim recently passed away, but his longtime friend has been digitizing and uploading the raw footage taken over the years. Many of the tapes are in such poor shape they are delaminating as he plays them to the digital recorder. Some great stuff.
