July 25, 2009 Holly and Mount Clemens Sub updates

Amtrak 350 and 355 - 28 and 90222.
Amtrak 352 - 26 and 90215.

491 Went north from Moterm about 10 minutes after Amtrak 350 passed by. Caught both at 9 Mile with the high green.

382 went north from Nolan at 2:40pm with the CN 5708 leading and 383 was just getting the signal at Delray to head over the NS bridge about this time as well. I didnt not see either of these trains, just heard TD2 chatting with them.

384 had the 5613 and 5712 and passed by Milwaukee Junction around 6:00 with a setout at East Yard.

385 with the 5559 and 9427 went south on the Shoreline. Nice vintage lashup.

101 had the 4918 and worked Moterm in the afternoon and went out the Mt. Clemens towards Nolan in the evening. They were putting cars away in East Yard when 385 was pulling past Conant.

GTW 4904 and 4911 were at Schaefer Road on the ex DT&I.

The elevator in Richmond is now operated by H??? Chemcial. Looks strictly fertilizer these days and no grain business. Also, doesn't look like they've used rail in a while.

July 26, 2009

CN was sort of busy in the Detroit area this evening, and I wasnt really planning on doing much railfanning today either.
First train of the day was Amtrak 350 going over 12 Mile Road in Royal Oak with the 34 and 90222, with 355 having the 90222 leading on the return trip to Chicago.

I was heading down I-75 and heard TD2 talking to 491 around Milwaukee Junction. They came around the corner at Clay Avenue just after 7pm with the CN 5676, 2649, IC 1026, and GTW 5813 for power.

Amtrak 352 was stuck behind them from Vinewood and had to wait at Milwaukee Junction to get onto the Holly and tonight's addition featured the 28 and 90215, with a lot of confused looking passengers seeing me out there.

Local 104 was sitting at St. Aubin waiting for 491 and 352 to get going up the Holly so they could follow them to work up around MP 7. Good sized train with the GTW 4918 leading.

384 was also at East Yard making a setout while all these other guys were going through Milwaukee Junction, so I worked my way out towards Warren and waited for them out along Groesbeck, but I heard 144 getting a track warrant at Nolan with the CN 8833 leading. 384 followed them out to Haven with the CN 2593 and 8016 providing the power. Those two trains were to have met 385 in the siding at Haven, but I didnt stick around for them.

Update 12:40am
Train 385 is heading down the Shoreline and is currently at Commonwealth with the CN 8863 leading, and Amtrak 354 is just getting onto the CN at Vinewood with #30 in the lead and 90200 on the tail end.

I know, I have that knack for being able to search youtube for trainfestival videos and happened to find that one? As I mentioned, someone, meaning "not my video."

It has varied in the past few days, but the likely times through New Haven is,

145 - around 3am
382/383 - late morning into the early afternoon
144/384/385 - anywhere between 5pm and 9pm, but could be later around midnight.

Its about 20 miles from Nolan to New Haven, so depending on how quick trains are moving it should take about 45 minutes or so between the two.

Thanks GTW6401. I'll have to pass on that 3am one. I'm not sure Mrs. Simon would be happy with me riding my bike that late :)

Amtrak 350 came north on the Holly thru Ferndale with the 30 and 90200 at 3:30pm. When I checked online earlier today it said there was a service disruption and they had the same equipment set as 354 last night.

The rail train came south on the Holly thru Royal Oak at 4:35pm with the GTW 5813 for power. They were going onto the Shoreline and tying down in perhaps Flat Rock.

104 came up to Moterm with the GTW 4914 and went south towards Milwaukee Junction after Amtrak 355. They had cars for Train 384 which was at East Yard awaiting their return.

CN 491 came up the Holly and worked Moterm this evening. They were coming past the Amtrak shanty in Royal Oak at 12:25am with the CN 5560, 2453, and GTW 4911. Pretty nice consist, and Ive been seeing a lot of the SD60F's passing through the Detroit area in the past few weeks.

Also saw Amtrak 354 rolling into Royal Oak at 1:20am with #35 and 90225 on the tail end.

CN 490 arrived in Pontiac at 08:15, CN 8854 leading CN 2260. They are going to set out 7 and pick up 3. I couldn't hang around to watch the work, but this was the first train I've been able to see on the Holly during my morning commute in months :)

Edit: Been meaning to mention this for a while - earlier this summer, at the Johnson St. crossing in Pontiac, they installed a median barrier in the road with those vertical pylon thingies to prevent people going around the gates. That crossing was abused quite a bit.

Years ago when Pontiac had three assembly plants and the stamping plant GTW would have an east and westbound stop in Pontiac around 8-9am. Both road freights required quite a bit of switching and there were two or three switch crews to handle the set outs and pick ups from these two trains. That was the good old days when most parts were delivered by rail.

Had a pair of northbound on the Holly tonight.

The first was train 491, which headed north from Moterm at 9:45pm after doing an intermodal pickup. Power was CN 2260 and 8854. They went up main 2.

Following a few minutes behind them was 767 on Main 1 with an empty Consumers Energy coal train. They came through Royal Oak at 10:10pm with the BNSF 8906 and 9146 on the head end.

104 was also heading south from Moterm after 767 was past there. They had the GTW 4914 and 31 cars headed for East Yard.

I also heard 384 getting a track warrant with the 8863 leading at 8:40pm, and 385 going down the Shoreline around 9:15pm.
