Re: CP sells major stake in Detroit River Tunnel
because the tunnel is not a tunnel . it's was not bored but sunk . so they could only enlarge it so far. so autorack and some container was better then none.

What about ties and ballasts remove drop about 15-25 inches in tunnel? Can rails stand with clamps on bottom of groove concrete in tunnel?rob wrote:because the tunnel is not a tunnel . it's was not bored but sunk . so they could only enlarge it so far. so autorack and some container was better then none.

Re: CP sells major stake in Detroit River Tunnel
The tube would mostlikey not support the rail be derectly attatched to it, the ties be it steel or wood distribute the weight of the trains, where as directly attatch would created a preasure point the width of the base of the rail, leading to a break down or cutting of the tube material. Cutting is a major problem if left un supervised, you can correct it by replacing a tie, but when you are unable to replace a tie you would eventualy have a weakened structure.

Michigan Central Railway Tunnel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_C ... way_Tunnel then sees photos in postcards... Can they make dig more down ground?SMRGUY wrote:The tube would mostlikey not support the rail be derectly attatched to it, the ties be it steel or wood distribute the weight of the trains, where as directly attatch would created a preasure point the width of the base of the rail, leading to a break down or cutting of the tube material. Why did CN make a bigger bored St. Clair Tunnel at Port Huron and Sarnia? Therefore, CN made succeed. Oh well, CP gave up Detroit River Tunnel...

I think there could be some issues with the grade being too steep if they dig down furtherOwlCaboose2853 wrote:Michigan Central Railway Tunnel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_C ... way_Tunnel then sees photos in postcards... Can they make dig more down ground?

Re: CP sells major stake in Detroit River Tunnel
They can not dig deaper into the earth. As was posted earlier in this thread tunel was built of steel sections. Trench doug in river, srctions put in trench, covered over and cocnrete put inside.
CP enlarged the south tube (w.b. main) some years ago so this track can take international double-stack and hi-cube cars but not the 20"2" racks. A new tunnel would have to be built.
Canadian National dug a 22 foot tunnel useing a tunnel boring machine. This will clear domestic double stack and 20'2" racks and still have room for future electricication should it be economical.
A new Detroit River Tunnel would make sence since a new tunnel will last 100 years.
