Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
I've been busy this past month....I scratchbuilt this car...in 1/29 scale.
I wanted a Hycube boxcar I could run on my indoor layout and these MiniHycube appliance cars fit the bill.
To make it easier on me I decided to cast the pieces so I only had to scratchbuild 1 side, 1 door, 1 roof, and the end is a kitbash from a USA Trains boxcar.
What do you think

Re: Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
very nice
Re: Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
Thanks guys,
AARR, It took several hours to do the drawings (I drew it in MS Visio from a drawing in MRR)
Then it took a couple of weekends to make the patterns. Another weekend to cast the parts.
A couple weekends to assemble and detail it.....the longest time was waiting for windows of opportunities to open to do all the painting (humidity has been crappy this winter).
Gov. Crappo, My layout is in a room that measures 11.5' x 23.5' (that would be the equivillant of about a 4' x 8' in HO) The idea is that in retirement I get a pole barn for my layout....that will be great!...but still a few years out.
Aaron, 1/29 is one of the many 'G' scales...it's exactly 3 times the size of HO (87/3=29). There are quite a few people in this scale that buy an HO model and scale it up accordingly....3 times as long, 3 times as wide and 3 times as tall. Its easier than finding drawings to scale.
My motive power looks like this:
And one of my cabooses I scratchbuilt also:
If any of you are interested in seeing some of how I assembled the Hycube go here:

Enjoy,
Brian

Re: Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
i understand the scale\ratio. makes sense....your track appears commerical....is it?...i hate to sound ignorant but i know zero about large scale (and very lil about anything else) ...at your scale is there a compromise on track gauge?...did you scratch the trucks wheels and couplers?....inquiring minds ya know

Re: Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
Gov.,
The track is commercial. There's plenty of suppliers of track in various materials and rail heights (codes)
I'm really thinking about trading my track for some more realistic stuff.
As for the trucks and couplers....this scale is just like smaller scales but with less available. The trucks are commercial and I use Kadee couplers (they are what is known as No.1 gauge couplers - that is 1/32 scale - which is what all the 'G' track is gauged at....so, yes, I run narrow gauge - about 4 scale inches narrower than scale.) You know whats funny about that....I used to model 'O' scale which is about 4 scale inches too wide.....maybe one day I'll get it right
'G' scale is most known for it being the trains people run in thier garden...many of which are whimsical and/or older narrow gage prototype....but more and more modern standard gauge stuff is being offered.
I'm giving up my track I had in my back yard, but this is what it looked like:
AARR, Not that much to it....but here it is

Here's a picture of the part of the layout I like to call the railfanning area.
If you compare it to the drawing above you'll see where it is.
Enjoy,
Brian

Do you have a run around track or industries to switch?

Re: Mini Hycube boxcar scratchbuild
Ya know I rember reading part of this, how could I have forgoton. That is just, I cant say. I always loved G scale stuff, but cost more money then HO so I had to give up. Plus I love realy modern stuff and just could not fit all that I would want in the same space.
