Re: Re CSX 8888 The story
One of the issues I have with the lash up that causes the derailment and follow up explosion is this. Diesel fuel has a flash point of 120 degree F. In most cases, diesel fuel will not explode. However, for the movie, it does explode. I know it is for dramatic impression.

You guys know it's all a movie, right?. At the beginning it says inspired on true events. Yes it had its plot holes, but all movies do.

Re: Re CSX 8888 The story
I watched the movie the other day. Of course there were all kinds of little things wrong about about it, but the one I found the funniest was that their made up town of "Stanton" in southern Pennsylvania was shown to have a population of 750,000.
Congrats to Stanton on being the 16th largest municipality in the United States...
Also thought it was funny that when they attempted to derail the train that a whole bunch of police and other emergency vehicles were parked right next to the tracks

Re: Re CSX 8888 The story
I learned another thing about the 8888, I'm not sure if this has been posted in this thread. Today I learned that since the 8888 was an ex conrail, shooting the emergency fuel line cut off would not work because on conrail you needed to hold the button for 3 seconds.
This was because on the NEC people would run up hit the button and then steal stuff from the train cars. So shooting the gas shut off would not work... Unless you can hold it for 3 seconds

Re: Re CSX 8888 The story
Bumping this post, I was bored and found this , CSX 8888 has since been rebuilt to a SD40-3, which is now numbered 4389. Apparently there were museums that attempted to save the locomotive but CSX determined that there wasn’t enough historical significance behind it. I think it’s historical but CSX was probably trying to not commit PR suicide. #4389 is currently working locals around Jacksonville/Waycross.
