I went to downtown Saginaw today (short time at HESR tracks). I saw 800 (near Genesse Ave.) but didn't see the others!!!! Where does 740 run to? Also, what time was it in town where I was? Engine #2014 is one I'd like to see—haven't seen it for a while!!!! Where is that engine usually kept (if anyone knows)? THANX!!!!

The 2014 is usually on the 740 job, based from Wenona Yard in Bay City. They usually depart from Bay City around 11am and spend 3 or 4 hours in Saginaw before returning to Bay City.

Thank you! I remember seeing that same engine, 2-2002, on the same job! I hope it stays in Central Michgan colors for a while! It's too bad they removed the "Canadian Style Bell" though!!!! Did those guys not like it?

2014 never had a canadian style bell...unless you're thinking of 9712, which is a Ex CN GP40-2WL.Robertrains wrote:GTW6401 wrote:The 2014 is usually on the 740 job, based from Wenona Yard in Bay City. I realize this is just a little nit-picky but technically these are designated GP-40-2L's (for lighter than normal weight). However, as you wrote it, I prefer adding the "W"Evan wrote:2014 never had a canadian style bell...unless you're thinking of 9712, which is a Ex CN GP40-2WL.

WOW—this would not be considered a "Canadian Style Bell?" What's the difference? I'm well aware of 9712 being a former CN unit though! Here's a shot of a Devco unit (which CMGN 2014 used to be), in NS, Canada (photo by Stephen Reeves) : http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=1996252

This model has been confusing!!!! I make Train Calendars yearly since 1999! In my 2000 edition, I have a photo of a CMGN train departing Durand! It was led by 9712! My caption labels it as a GP40-2L! My next calendar has another shot of 9712! That year I labeled it as a GP40-2W! Diesel Shop lists it as a "GP40-2LW!" I know they don't have 100% acurate info, but what is it?!

Re: LSRC/HESR/GLC/AA Updates: September 2012
According to The Field Guide To Modern Diesel Locomotives by Greg McDonnell, 2002, the first 233 built were GP40-2L refering to their lighter weight (their frames sit slightly higher than straight 40-2's) and the final 35 (9633-9667) were standard GP40-2's with comfort cabs. But they are officially referred to as GP40-2's and do not use the W. HESR's 9712 is former CN 9654 which is among the final 35 and therefore a straight GP40-2 with comfort cab. However, I prefer adding the W designation like 99.9% of us already do anyway.

Both Railpictures.net and rrpicturearchives.net show these as "GP40-2LW!!!!" It's hard to figure this out! Whatever the case could be—they are great looking locos!!!!

Back in the late 1990's Diesel Era magazine ran a two part story on these they called them GP40-2LW's They said that the L meant Canadian Leader meaning it could lead and W meant it had a Wide Cab. Im just going by what it said in the Mag not to discredit anybody.Robertrains wrote:AARR wrote:. The I-beams on the 233 "L" were built taller and thinner than standard GP40-2's cuasing them to be lighter (Probably not by much) and slightly taller. CN is notorious for having special order units rather than standard ones. In the book I mentioned above they show a picture of a CN "L" unit and regular CN 40-2 and the slight difference in height is apparent.penn central wrote:Back in the late 1990's Diesel Era magazine ran a two part story on these they called them GP40-2LW's They said that the L meant Canadian Leader meaning it could lead and W meant it had a Wide Cab. Thanks Don it sounds like that field guide you have is a pretty nice book.AARR wrote:The I-beams on the 233 "L" were built taller and thinner than standard GP40-2's cuasing them to be lighter (Probably not by much) and slightly taller.
