Things you have thought about while railfanning

Unread post by Scooterb »

While my son and I are out railfaning we get a little crazy sometimes, well really me, but these are some what if, or wondering what we have come up with.
While railfanning in Fostoria we have wondered what the guy in F tower would say if we went up and knocked on the door and asked him to get the cars in the B&O yard moved because they were blocking our shots.

Another one is while a train is waiting for a crew change or stuck at a signal we went up to them and knocked on the door to ask if we could use the bathroom.

Just some of my thoughts. What are yours?

Old fool for that, they will tell your son and you come in tower then they let both of you go in bathroom. The crew will be lock door the bathroom. So they will call railroad cop. An officer enter into bathroom get both of you. They get handcuffs put your son and your hands then move to railroad cop vehicle. Go to anywhere police station for both of you will put in the cell room. Your son and you obtain let go from police station.

I often wonder what it would be like to be up there running the train, and to have all these people taking pictures of you along your route?
I suppose I'll find out when I get the job I want.

We've had some interesting thoughts, especially when its been Dave Cenci, Andrew H and I. I especially remember a couple times we were out, once in Port Huron, and once in Durand, when the air traffic out numbered the rail traffic just enough to stand out. I know we've also said a couple things about the locals in Port Huron (and once or twice in Elkhart) just waltzing right through the yard, and theorizing that if we did about the same thing, we'd be ok, as long as we didn't have cameras or scanners or anything to suggest that we were fans and not just passers-through. Actually, that's come up a couple times, mainly though just along the lines of walking in without a camera and seeing how long it takes for them to realize we're not locals taking a shortcut. Of course, we'd never do it, the thrill of risking getting caught trespassing somehow doesn't make up for the negative consequences of getting caught. Like the whole potential of getting arrested.
We usually stick to catching up with each other and ripping on each other for different things, especially things that happened in the past, train related and train-not-related.
Another thing we discuss is the status of our (model) railroads. One of us (me) has a hard time making up his mind about what he's doing, while trying to incorporate the companies of the other two, and tends to forget what he decided the last time the subject came up, leading to some ribbing and more discussion about various things along those lines.
Guess I don't really remember a whole lot of really crazy/silly things we've come up with.

I'll ask a crew next time I talk to one what they would do if you asked to use the bathroom, I've often wondered what it would be like to talk to an all women crew dead on the law or stopped somewhere.

hmm...most of the things i think about while sitting out railfanning usually don't have all that much to do with trains. I've thought about cleaning my car, fixes to it... Things i need to do later in the day.. sometimes i just scroll through my cell phone contact list and just call people when it's quiet on the rails.
When i've seen brake shoes and brake parts along the rail, i picture them flying off over crossings and such....think about updates i'll need to do for this site... i think at times about what others think when they see me out there with my camera in hand and standing around my car in the middle of nowhere. Ah, the joys of railfanning..definately enjoy the time out there, whether it be alone or with some buddies.

Charles summed it up when I get the chance to go chasing with him, but when it is just me and andrew, we wonder if CN has a camera around 16th street, and durring the day, the CN RTC's chaeck for railfans...and wonder how long we can sit before they send a train over.
Also, we have joked about calling the CN emergency number durring slow times, to see if there are any trains on their way.(Not like we realy would).
I like to reminis the past, and ponder(as well as fear) the future of railroads.
Wondering if any of the Boarder patrol officers are railfans..and if so, if they have the freedome to take pic of the great views of the yard, or engines deep in Tunnel Yard..etc.
I also ponder things, such as my future, getting the funding to go to RR school(I have no job, no car, and no money right now)..finding a nice girl to settel down with..etc(ya know..boring personal crap).
things I cant control(Like the new Metallica album..in the making..it best be metal)..railroad management at CN(and single tracking ALL their lines) GE ruling the Locomotive market(Ack)
I could go on..but I wont..lol

I think about how someday I will buy an ALCO century locomotive and restore it to it's former glory, And the shortline I am going to buy to run it on.

That is of coarse when I win the lotto or go Diamond.

Hmmmm….when I’m out railfanning….hmmmm….what I think about (when I’m not talking to friends or the engineer or whoever) how I can improve my layout, like making it look more realistic or how the real railroads look. Then I will fall into deep thought and probably miss the oncoming train, haha…just kidding! No, I think about everything, mostly railroad related. :D

I hope the people in the apartments on the other side of the tracks, don't call the cops on me because they think I'm a peeping tom, how bizarre I must look sitting in my truck at a crossing, why the Livingston county Road Commission won't grade 12 to make it passible for cars :D
