Shortlines around Columbus
Tomorrow I will be spending all day around Columbus. I am looking for advice and help with the operations of the Ohio Central, Ohio southern, Columbus and Ohio River and any others I may not have heard of. Midland Sub gave me a good explanation of the I&O's Logan Sub. I may go looking for the shuttle. I'd like to catch something that I don't see closer to NW Ohio. Any regular Saturday runs and such? Also anything on weekday operations would be helpfull. Some time this summer I'll get around to spending some weekdays down there. Thanks in advance!

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
Glad I caught this. Nothing is usually scheduled to work on the Logan Sub on Sundays. Sometimes to will make a run to Logan and back, but that seems to be rare. Both locos I&O 5013 and CFE 3888 will be parked at the crew trailer on Collins Rd in Lancaster. If you want to head that way take US 33 to Lancaster- take business route into actual town. Should be about two miles from that split for Collins Rd. There's a Meijers at the intersection. Turn right and you'll see the tracks and crossing where the locos are parked.
Camp Chase is on the west side of Columbus. They keep their three locos parked next to the Con-Agra mill at Georgesville Rd and Sullivant Ave. Two locos are parked inside of a fence next to the bowling alley. Third loco is way back in the rear of the mill and inaccessible. It's right off of 270 on the southwest side of town. They built the new Hollywood Casino next to the tracks where the locos are parked. Easy pics of something in a cage- just like at the zoo. Never work Sundays.
Ohio Central is located on the east side of Columbus next to the airport. No idea what they do on Sunday. There is an eastside local that they keep the power (at least used to) at Taylor Station Rd at the cement plant (?). Someone in Columbus will need to help more with the OC.

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
Several times a week I deliver food to several employees at the Conagra Plant on Sullivant Avenue and I noticed today that there was a brand new cut of cars waiting to be unloaded at the pit. There were only two cars there on Tuesday and saw about a dozen today. There is also a trackmobile on the property which probably frees up the two orange MP1500 Locos for other assignments. Yesterday while out on a delivery I seen them going back towards the engine house after delivering cars to either the Dispatch Plant or the plastic transload facilitly on Crosswind Drive. We also deliver a lot of food to the employees at the Dispatch Printing Plant as well.

Delivered to the conagra plant today and the Camp Chase was backing a new cut of hoppers into the facility. About 20 or so hoppers with Alberta Grain, CP markings among others.

The Camp Chase is still going out Tuesdays and Thursdays to the Lilly Chapel elevator. Saw grain hoppers at the elevator when I went daytripping to Springfield on Saturday.

Camp Chase should see an uptick with inbound paper rolls delivered to the Columbus Dispatch. The Dispatch is taking over printing seven more smaller newspapers along with USA Today for the Central Ohio region in April or May I believe. They already print the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky newspapers each day.

Saw a brand new set of grain hoppers at the Conagra Elevator today while making my deliveries. This time grain hoppers in BN and BNSF livery were present at the elevator. The railroad must've made a delivery early today or yesterday.

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
Bumping this thread up.
Are there any updates on how the previously mentioned operations? What power is on the Logan Sub now?
Does the OHCR run an interchange train into Columbus 7 days a week or less? Does that train come out of Newark and what time does it normally get moving from there? Does the East Columbus local run only on weekdays?

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
Logan power was 5007 and one of the CFE locos, probably 3884.
OC NWT I believe is Mon-Fri from Newark to Watkins-parsons and back. Not unusual for them to run extras on the weekends. Time wise seems to be a daylight run. ECL still weekday job as far as I know.

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
The OC NWT to NS Watkins usually heads east about sun up. He was by Blacklick about 0630 today. NWT power is then used on NPT to CSX Parsons, normally getting to Columbus around noon and if things go well at Parsons starts heading home around 5 PM.

Re: Shortlines around Columbus
Are NWT and NPT weekday only trains? Also, does NWT return all the way to Newark before becoming NPT or does it change on the east side of Columbus?PowellWye wrote:The OC NWT to NS Watkins usually heads east about sun up.
