LS&I to get new 3 mile bypass?

Unread post by JANGAJONGA »

Here is the article, that mentions the LS&I getting a 3 mile bypass of Eagle Mills yard. This seems to be different than the reactivation of Humboldt trackage. Anyone know what this means?

Some searching a year or two ago revealed that the Mineral Ranged owned the right away from Dimond Jct towards Marquette on the old DSSA which is the grade that comes out to the LS&I Scales.

Well since Cliffs was dragging their feet on the sale or use of the railbanked ROW that they have out west that Rio and the new Mineral Range needed why not dangle this out infront of them....This will enable the LS&I to bypass the slow speed over the scales when returning back to the mines, they know the empty weights of the cars already and use an AEI tag system as the cars go over the scale to the Dock. The route I'm seeing them take would be to Diamond Jct then over the old Soo Line/CNW to the other side of Eagle Mills Jct then to the mines. With Diamond Jct to the scales put back in place the Mineral Range or Rio Tinto could get access to the dock in Marquette with out stepping foot inside of eagle mills.....

With the Empire Mine temporary shut down and eventually closing another mine or two opening up can almost be guaranteed. Should be interesting to see how all of this will play out.

Could you possibly map out/diagram it? I'm having a hard time visualizing everything

Who owns what track is confusing in this area. In fact, many years ago the track in this area was such a maze that it rivaled some big cities for spaghetti design track layouts.

heres a link to the area. The line that goes up with M35 then over to where "quarry road" is where the WC parraelled the LS&I at the Scales. It then went to Lower Mqt Harbor. The area south of CR 492 is Eagle Mills Yard. I'll try to come up with something better when I get home to Michigan.
