GP's are easier on track, have less traction motors, have better visibility in reverse than those things with flared radiators, and ride pretty darn well. Until the larger AC units with radial trucks are being sold off, the majority of shortlines won't be bringing in six-axles. Plus, 4,400 horsepower is a little bit overkill for most shortline operations. Obviously operations like Iowa Pacific's San Luis and Rio Grande would be an exception to this.MQT3001 wrote:If there is anything in motive power that makes me wonder, it is indeed the shortline's future. Obviously lots of crap GEs and then their EMD counterparts, but hardly any 4-axles to be found. Will they go for 6-axles or keep the Geeps going?
Most shortlines are best served by GP38-2s, GP40-2's, SW1500s, or MP15s.
