This bridge was originally built of wood in 1875. In 1892 it was modified to accommodate rail traffic. At it's peak time it would see 40 trains a day. In 1960 it was replaced with the steel bridge you see in the picture and carried trains until 1982 when rail service to the area was discontinued. Today it is used by hundreds of snowmobiles every winter.

CORRECT!atrainguy60 wrote:Between Hancock and Houghton?
This unique double deck bridge has two levels of traffic. The upper level is for vehicular traffic while pedestrians and snowmobiles can use the lower level. The lower level was originally used for trains, but there are no longer any trains in the Keweenaw so the rails have been removed.
In the summer the bridge is often left up, allowing the vehicle traffic to use the lower lever and boats up to 35' tall to travel under the bridge without it being raised. Durring the winter after the river freezes over the bridge is lowered to the "train level" to allow snowmobiles to use the lower deck, while vehicles continue to cross on the upper deck. When a a big ship comes thru they can send the bridge up to over 100 ft above the water for passage.

Wish I'd been paying better attention- I spend a lot of time watching trains across the street from this location...

It is interesting that while playing this game one can put up a photo right in your backyard and not catch it right away. With Google Earth you can manipulate the angle and crop the edges to make a highly known spot a bit of a challenge. Better than the spots no one has ever seen or heard of.

Hint: This is near a former major passenger station.

Here is the same line where it crosses US-23 near Milan. This was the first place I looked because the bridge looks almost the same except a bit more rusted. Note the design in the concrete abutments, same as the 1st photo.

Re: Where am I?
The bridge also reminds me of some GT and DT&I bridges around Detroit and Pontiac.
