Three more SD40-2's headed out to MPI for rebuild. 8806 was one of the numbers.
Went out on a Q639-07 it looked like.

If so, that would certainly be the first 8800 tracked for rebuild. And, it would finally open the door for the 8888 to be rebuilt.CSX_CO wrote:Three more SD40-2's headed out to MPI for rebuild. 8806 was one of the numbers.

Sounds like they are shipping out 8300s and 8400s as well. These are rebuilds from SD40 cores, and have shorter decks. Supposedly, these will still be classed as SD40-3s, but will be classed in a different number series, perhaps the 4100s.
Do you have the other two numbers?

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
The history on those MK rebuilds is a bit complicated, in many instances CSX traded their SD40's to MK in exchange for SD45 cores that MK rebuilt to SD40-2 standards for CSX.

Not 100 % sure of the heritage of those SD45's but I believe that many from the fleet that C&NW had collected for power for their Powder River coal trains early on.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
In regards to the rebuilds MK did for CSX that came as 8439-8488, has reminded me that back in the day, to appease the unions involved, over Huntington rebuilding them themselves, the only way they would allow this, if the locomotives returning to CSX were not from the same cores. CSX in turn retired and sold their own units, and all the units coming back to CSX were rebuilds were from other cores and other railroads.MSchwiebert wrote:The history on those MK rebuilds is a bit complicated, in many instances CSX traded their SD40's to MK in exchange for SD45 cores that MK rebuilt to SD40-2 standards for CSX.

They may have worked out a similiar deal for those stored 8800s that CSX has had sitting around for years, and continues to add on to. I do know that CSX did not want to tackle the 8800s for rebuilding themselves, It was always a surprise that they continue to sit, but now that one has moved, perhaps all the rest will go as well, either for trade in, or payment for the other ones they are now working at, in lieu of coming to CSX as rebuilt.
Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
Another group of SD40-2 headed out on q639 again this morning. Didn't jot down any numbers. FWIW system has shown all the engines as being tagged to MPI for rebuild, including the 8806.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
Interesting, I never knew "why" this was the case. I figured it was so that CSX could keep their "unit count" up by using the engines destined for trade while MK rebuilt the "new" engines from the cores they had on hand.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
I think 8888 does not need to be chopped up and altered so severely, but I don't know what I would think about seeing a unit RESTORED in CSX paint at a museum.

I'm 95% confident 8888 will never see the road again as the 8888. Split the remaining odds between it comes back as a dash-3 or that it is a trade-in.MQT1223 wrote:I think 8888 does not need to be chopped up and altered so severely, but I don't know what I would think about seeing a unit RESTORED in CSX paint at a museum.

Did some digging on the units that went thru here.
8837, 8336, 8409, 8848, 8342, 8806, 8883, and 8869.

These reports are great, Russ! 36 units now known out for rebuild. 30 to MPI, 6 to East St Louis.CSX_CO wrote:Did some digging on the units that went thru here.

IIRC, the plan was for 50 more SD40-3s this year, around 100 dash-3s total on the year. We shall see.
Meanwhile, anybody find a 3200 yet?
Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
GPS for CSXT 3200 is turned on. QD 83 which should be around Erie.
