According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: 5/07/2015
After walking uphill over a mile, they found the break just east of MCCords. There is about a ~10 car gap in the train a little ways east of the xing. TM now on scene, sounded like a drawbar issue
18:18: they pulled west of the crossing here --they tore the WHOLE COUPLER BOX out of the west end of a coil car. They're not going anywhere anytime soon with that defect! Something is going to have to come from Lansing, I imagine!

Thanks for posting my photo, Kyle.
Looks like they're now going to cut the gon off, and take the headend to Fox. I speculate that they were hoping that the crossing height would be enough to dislodge it...now they're a good ways from the xing and certainly not able to lift it themselves

19:10 EDT: at least the headend is westbound. IDK if only for fox or all the way to Wyoming. I suspect the latter.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: 5/07/2015
After counting the headend, the break was between the 150th and 151st car, give or take one or two cars.
It was really fun to watch them take the hill...walking speed most of the way.

Amtrak 370 20 axles 362 feet at 91.9 at 21 22 EDT and an Approach Limited signal at Vine 92 at 21:22 EDT. Approach signal Hilltop 90 a few mins later.
CSX could shorten their 335s from TOL a little bit, but of course it is too much effort, and money (???, how do they say it is too expensive?) for CrashSmashXplode. I'm not against them, but they could do some things better. With that size of trains running daily I'm surprised this type of thing does not happen more often.
I want to say I've heard trains that were only about 130 cars long being 22,000 tons. That multiplied by 2,000 (a ton) equals a staggering 48,000,000 LBS. I don't hear trains talk about their weight much, but the few times I have ( about a year ago last) I think that's what I heard. Plz correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: 5/07/2015
I don't think 22,000 tons is typical for 130 cars. Sounds a bit high to me. Possible for sure but probably not very often. Just for example the 64 car potash train (all loads) was only 8000 tons. Bulk commodities weigh much more than junk freights and intermodals usually. I think many of the coal trains are around 135 cars and 15,000 tons ballpark. They are probably among the heavier common trains on the rails.justin_gram wrote:Amtrak 370 20 axles 362 feet at 91.9 at 21 22 EDT and an Approach Limited signal at Vine 92 at 21:22 EDT. Re: CSX Train Location Updates: 5/07/2015
Coal trains are usually 110 tons of coal in the car plus a ~20 ton tare weight, so 130 x 130 is about 17,000 tons, plus power. Up the grade at Saugatuck with four 6-axles, you're looking at around 18,000 tons, or 36 MILLION pounds.Jetlink wrote:I don't think 22,000 tons is typical for 130 cars. Sounds a bit high too me. Re: CSX Train Location Updates: 5/07/2015
Looked that up, 130 car coal from CHI to WO is about 18,000 tons.
That # that I remember is from a Q327 last year. I guess it was probably about 150 cars, but still was between 22 and 24 thousand tons. I've been told the 327s can get heavy sometimes.
And by the way... P370 is still in St. Joseph, SJ swing bridge isn't locking up properly. Might be a while.

22,000 tons? Maybe a 150 car coal train might weigh that much. Even the 200+ car 335s aren't much over 11,000 tons.

P370 arrived in SJ an hour ago, and still in the same place (almost) an hour later.
DEPARTING ST JOSEPH AT 22:43 EDT, ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 25 MINUTES OFF SCHEDULE.
MEDIUM CLEAR INDICATION AT BENTON HARBOR AT 22:44 EDT. BRIDGE REPORTS 77 DEGREES ON THE SWINGSPAN TONIGHT.
