Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
In addition to the monthly update, just posted...
1. It is as of yet unknown if CSX has, or will still, bid out 50 more SD40-3s that were in an option contract with MPI, but not optioned.
2. REPORT: Ten C40-8Ws are being sent to GE Erie, PA for re-manufacturing. This includes both mechanical and electronic elements. When complete, the units will have the same brains as the new GEVOs do. Apparently, NS isn't the only major carrier trying to get more years out of the hordes of Dash-8s. Time will tell if the program goes further.
3. Thus far, all of the B40/20-8s we have reported as retired have been spotted enroute to Larry's Truck and Electric. Their future, along with the rest of the units, are unknown.

What is the status on the standard cab C-40 dash 8's. Are they on
the block or not until years end? I saw 7592 on K901 a couple of
weeks ago.

As we reported recently, they're all enroute to storage pending retirement. Most are already stored. If you catch one, you're pretty lucky at this point.dave989 wrote:What is the status on the standard cab C-40 dash 8's. Are they on

Data update:
ALL B20-8s are now retired
ALL B40-8s are now retired
ALL C40-8s are now retired
Additional data coming as to how this impacts the bigger picture of the whole roster, sometime soon.

Units destined for LTEX:
4839, 5910, 5949, 5953, 5971, 5974, 9157, 9163, 9241, 5517, 5537, 5569, 5824, 5847, 5851, 5867, 5897 and 5898.
All previous retirements, except the 4839, the first SD70AE stricken from the roster. She had ground relay problems. Probably the first non-wreck SD70ACe retirement from anywhere?
Full monthly update due up in the next couple of days...

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
This month, we're debuting several new measures of the roster for your viewing pleasure. They'll normally be found in the regular update, but for this first time, we're posting separately, to get some definitions down.
First up, we have a total horsepower counter. This uses the rated horsepower applied to each locomotive, summed for the entire roster. This includes storage units, and thus is the theoretical power output if every unit on the roster was put into gear at the same time. A very large number, it is.
Total Available Horsepower: 14,687,300
Second, is a new section tabulating builder data. General Electric and Electro-Motive are self-explanatory. CSX in-house covers all internal rebuilds that CSX themselves have completed. Note, that this DOES NOT include previous Chessie or Conrail rebuilds. Instead, those units and all other rebuilds by the likes of VMV, MPI and NRE are classed under "other".
Builder totals (pct), change:
General Electric: 2146 (50.08%)
Electro-Motive: 1543 (36.01%)
CSX in-house: 216 (5.04%)
Other: 380 (8.87%)
Third, we've added a built for listing. What's important to know, is that we consider rebuilds to be entirely new units, for the purpose of the roster. Hence, SD40-3s are CSX with a new build date, while 8800-series SD40-2s are considered Cornail, with the date when they were completed by CR. Thus, consider these totals either original construction, or most recent rebuild, if applicable. For the most part, our definition of rebuild includes a model designation change, such as SD40-2 to SD40-3, or GP35 to RD SLUG.
So essentially, this list tabulates what all was built for what railroad. While we do have data for each CSX predecessor road on file, they're listed according to the CSX family tree. Thus Chessie System covers all of the B&O, C&O, WM, and SBD covers the other side. Conrail is everything from Conrail, RDG or PC. Misc Predecessors are any direct takeovers by CSX (think RF&P), and all others include those built for the likes of EMDX, as demonstrators.
Built for totals (pct), change:
CSX Transportation: 2836 (66.18%)
Seaboard System: 529 (12.35%)
Conrail: 461 (10.76%)
Chessie System: 422 (9.85%)
Other [not from CSX tree]: 31 (0.72%)
Misc Predecessors: 6 (0.14%)
Any questions, please ask. There are a lot of thick explanations, so excuse me if I didn't make it clear enough - we can try again if need be

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
This is interesting. I'd be curious to see if you could break this down further. Might go to show who took care of their units early on. Like I doubt much L&N or CRR power is left or WM power. I wonder how the Conrail power was picked and where it came from. The Misc. Predecessors are interesting too.Saturnalia wrote:This month, we're debuting several new measures of the roster for your viewing pleasure. Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
I won't post this each time because it'd be a time consuming PITA which doesn't change much, but here is the situation currently. Remember, each family's total is the one I post earlier.
CSX = 2836
CR Family
CR = 412
PC = 28
RDG = 21
Chessie Family
CS = 18
C&O = 162
B&O = 209
WM = 33
SBD Family
SBD = 111
SCL = 139
L&N = 262
CRR = 10
GA = 7
Misc Predecessors
Western Railway of Alabama = 1
Atlanta and West Point = 1
RF&P = 4
FWIW all of the "misc" units, not built for a CSX Predecessor, were built for EMDX. And a note, we credit the SD70AEs to CSX, not EMDX, as built for.
Another thing to think about, is that with the exception of Conrail, basically every unit on this list is an EMD, since the oldest GEs on the roster are from 1990, as C40-8Ws built for CSX.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
Apparently CSX 4617, the last straight SD40 CSX operated, has been donated to the C&O Historical Society in Clifton Forge, and will join 614 on Display.
Not CSX related, but the pair of unpatched C&NW Dash 9's were donated to IRM today as well.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
4617 was indeed spotted on Q401 the other day with this as it's rumored destination. The unit has been destined for the C&OHS according to many, but just finally making its way there. This will be a roster subtraction for us this month.MQT1223 wrote:Apparently CSX 4617, the last straight SD40 CSX operated, has been donated to the C&O Historical Society in Clifton Forge, and will join 614 on Display.
Not CSX related, but the pair of unpatched C&NW Dash 9's were donated to IRM today as well.
And cool to hear about the CNW units. Sounds like if this traffic downturn has any upside, it is railroads retiring some of their more noteable older power and writing a couple off as donations. Good for them, and good for the historian in all of us.

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
Relating to the C&NW -9s, I was informed that the 8646 was signed 5 more years to UP, while 8701 was donated for good? Was that original bogus or did the plans change?
