Re: Laharpe Shops
Not really. Most of the locomotives are sitting beside the shop building with freight cars on the other side. A few of the junkers are in the open on the north side. Plus, access is from the north side so if there's sun it's never good. The eastbound and westbound trains sometimes meet here in the afternoon and there are a few opportunities while they are swapping power.
There are a number of open areas to the east if you catch a train on the road.

Re: Laharpe Shops
According to Railfan and Railroad on Feb 15, 2016 there were the following units:
GP 20 2048, CANX SW1200, 1352, CS01 SW1200RS, Kekouk 471 GP 18 (don't think KJ had a GP18), PREX 102 RS-3 M (traction motors missing?), PREX 149 SW1500, PREX 1357 SW1200, PREX 1610, 1611 in Alabama and Florida markings, PREX 171m1754 FP9A,
1761 F9B where I believe in out the road, GP-20s 2032,2057, 4101 former GP-9 CN, 7002 also a CN GP-9?.
How many of these units are out of service or stored in service I don't know.

Re: Laharpe Shops
Because of the location of the shop relative to the town and yard, there are no real good photos to be had.
Right now at Laharpe is the following units (all O.O.S.):
PREX 100 (NW2): stored dead, has water leaks in the block
PREX 102 (RS3m): stored dead, traction motor leads cut by vandals.
KJRY 471 (GP8): stored awaiting wiring work, getting attention as time allows
PREX 1298 (SW1200RS): lettered as CS01, Stored dead in the shop due to missing windows.
PREX 1352 (SW1200RS): stored dead with bad main generator and traction motors
PREX 1610 (GP16): stored dead awaiting shop time
PREX 1611 (GP16): stored awaiting motor work and other attention, long term project like 471
PREX 1751 (FP9A): stored dead
PREX 1754 (FP9A): stored dead
PREX 2029 (GP20): parts unit
PREX 2050 (GP20): parts unit, crankshaft failure, stored in shop with many parts stripped
PREX 2057 (GP20): parts unit
PREX 3048 (GP20): parts unit
Operational but around the shop:
PREX 1301 (SW1300), PREX 1357 (SW1200RS), PREX 1761 (F9B), and PREX 2041 (GP20)

Re: Laharpe Shops
Bulbs, thanks for the good info. Is Laharpe a system repair location for other PREX railroads? Seems like a lot of engines for one little short line.
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...
Re: Laharpe Shops
Mechanical forces from Laharpe travel as necessary to other Pioneer properties. Locomotives coming off lease or surplus to needs are usually stored at Laharpe.
Keep in mind for number of locomotives on the railroad, on Wednesday there were 11 locomotives being used to meet KJ's power needs, and it's a slow period for traffic.

Re: Laharpe Shops
Wow, I wouldn't have guessed half that. There must be more activity than I thought. I read the Trains Mag article about Keokuk Junction and thought I understood the schedules but obviously I am way off.

Re: Laharpe Shops
Does anyone know what happened to the old West Michigan NW2u #100? It was supposed to go to another Pioneer road after the WMI was sold, haven't seen any photos of it since, wondered if maybe it would up in Laharpe.

Re: Laharpe Shops
What happened is the genius who wrote the above list of stored units forgot to include it even though I was looking right at it when I wrote the list. Above list has been edited to show PREX 100 as present.SD80MAC wrote:Does anyone know what happened to the old West Michigan NW2u #100? 2048: I'm not aware of any PREX 2048. Is it possible you are thinking of 3048, which is sitting in the dead line like it has for the past 10+ years?
4101 is in service, currently assigned to the Laharpe turn job
7002 is currently off property.

Re: Laharpe Shops
Your first mistake was assuming there is a schedule. Right now there's no set schedule.AARR wrote:Wow, I wouldn't have guessed half that. There must be more activity than I thought. Kolbe is running flips to Laharpe with 1750-1761-1752 and using 2003 as a spare/transfer engine.
Keokuk proper is using 149 and 2040 as switchers.
The Laharpe turn job is using 2047-4101-2035 as it's power.
The shop has 1301, 1357, 2018, and 2032 available for service. 2041 needs some minor repairs and can be available.

Re: Laharpe Shops
Bulby, why so many GP20's instead of other types? What do they like them?

Re: Laharpe Shops
I think it's mostly a case of the GP20s being available at the right price back when Pioneer was buying power in larger numbers. While they are the largest single group of units on the PREX roster, they are not the most reliable.AARR wrote:Bulby, why so many GP20's instead of other types? What do they like them?
The next largest group of units on the PREX roster would be the 17 GP16s.

Thanks Bulby. After reading about them in Trains Magazine I've taken a liking to this short line

Re: Laharpe Shops
Thanks Bubly, as I recall Pioneer got most of their GP-16 fleet for about 35-40k per engine. The GP-20s I recall were about $67k-$85k per engine. I think if I read your comment right (and correct me if I am wrong) but it the GP-16s are the most reliable in the fleet? I know Pioneer has a sprinkling of GP-8s, GP-10s and GP-9s but not many GP-7s.
Re: Laharpe Shops
The most reliable locomotives in the fleet would be the former Algoma Central FP9s.jrgerber wrote:Thanks Bubly, as I recall Pioneer got most of their GP-16 fleet for about 35-40k per engine. I only mentioned the GP16s because that was the second largest group of units on the roster.

Six units on the KJ in this video, are some of these units headed elsewhere especially the SW units?
