Is there any tourist roads a couple hours of Detroit that will train people to be brakemen or conductors? Im asking as I really want to work on a railroad and feel that having any kind of prior operating railroad experience would help. Thanks in advance.

Try Amtrak. They'll hire anyone, qualified or not.

Southern Michigan Railroad Society would be happy to get you started. We have had a few volunteers transition to the big leagues and vice versa. We are in Clinton, Mi and we should have a mandatory crew training session coming up in the next few months. That is the best way to get started. Check us out at

Perhaps Michigan Transit Museum in Mt Clemens? They are volunteer run.
