CN SD60F Status?
Does anyone know if CN's SD60Fs are in service? I've never caught one on camera and I really want to. I haven't heard of them being retired or scrapped, but I can't find any recent sightings of one.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
I believe most are in storage, along with some of the C40-8Ms.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
I assume they're being stored somewhere in Canada? And what does it mean when they're in storage (what will happen to them)? I know some BCOL C40-8Ms were put into storage and later taken out.SD80MAC wrote:I believe most are in storage, along with some of the C40-8Ms.

Storage pretty much means parked until they're needed again.

Oh, ok. Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully they will be needed soon.SD80MAC wrote:Storage pretty much means parked until they're needed again.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
Quite a bit is actually being stored here in the US, some of the shops in Illinois have had lines of stored locomotives recently and as SD80MAC said, mostly Cab units.
Re: CN SD60F Status?
Doesn't say much for our economy. It wasn't too long ago they were short on locos.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
Last I knew only 1 60F was in use, some of the C40-8M's have come out of storage recently. The main killer for the Barns Hoborich was the order of all the ET44AC's that showed up over the year.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
Not uncommon to see power cycled in and out of storage. Idea being long-term storage can do harm, so keeping units in no more than a few months may be the best way to do it.

CN has them up for auction right now.

I really hope a Michigan Shortline acquires some. Am I the only one thinking LSRC or HESR could benefit from a couple of these? Possibly even GLC?12Bridge wrote:CN has them up for auction right now.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
Yes, because what the heck would a shortline (who do lots of switching) do with a huge full carbody locomotive that is nigh impossible to switch with? Cowled freight locomotives were designed to lead road trains through areas where the winters were cold and brutal and are very inflexible in just about any other service.MiRailProductions wrote:I really hope a Michigan Shortline acquires some. Yeah, I didn't think about that. Cowl units are only good on road trains...SD80MAC wrote:Yes, because what the heck would a shortline (who do lots of switching) do with a huge full carbody locomotive that is nigh impossible to switch with? Re: CN SD60F Status?
Is that why the 35xx series Alcos were off the LSRC's roster so quickly (as compared to their other Alco power)? If anyone picked some up, it would be LSRC, but that doesn't seem to fit with everything else they've been doing lately.SD80MAC wrote:Yes, because what the heck would a shortline (who do lots of switching) do with a huge full carbody locomotive that is nigh impossible to switch with? Re: CN SD60F Status?
No, not really. The M420s just may have not been in as good of shape as the other LSRC Alcos. 3504 was one of the last operating units on the Lake State, however. They weren’t cowls like SD60Fs, either.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
At least two of the C425's were rebuilt in 1999 and 2000. The M420's were acquired a few years later and I don't know if the were rebuilt or not.

Re: CN SD60F Status?
well, it looks as if 15 of the former CN SD60F units will be saved. The following is from the new loconotes group page and at least one of these units has been spotted in transit with ACWR reporting marks, as I questioned as to weather or not they were simply going into storage for someone. ACWR is storing former AC6000's for PRLX. that isn't the case apparently with these.
15 ex-CN SD60Fs are heading to the ACWR: 5520, 5521, 5526, 5527, 5530, 5531, 5534, 5536, 5539, 5545, 5548, 5549, 5558, 5559, 5560
