"Golden Spike" 150th Anniversary trip, Utah, May 2019!!!!
Alright folks, I am "Finally" doing my "Trip Report" of my "Golden Spike" 150th Anniversary last May! Here are lots of high resolution film scans! Man, that trip was awesome!
Wednesday, May 8, 2019
After my Mother (Susan) and I flew into Salt Lake City, Utah, we caught Utah Railway® "Light Engines" in orange Genesee & Wyoming® colors (GW bought Utah Rwy in 2002, Canon® T-90 35mm):

Thursday May 9, 2019
Staying at the Radisson Hotel® was a good location! The NRHS housed their annual "Convention" there (saw fellow Bluewater® member Julian Wolfe in the elevator upon arriving May 8.)! We took the FrontRunner® commuter train to Union Pacific®'s celebration in Ogden and noticed this guy on his cell phone among the crowd (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238766
What a great job UP did with "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 #4014 (world's largest steam loco) along with "Living Legend" 4-8-4 #844 (only North American steam locomotive never retired)! I "Hoisted" my cameras high above a large crowd by holding the bottom of my Bogen® Monfrotto tripod legs, "Self-timer" taking a guess aiming (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238769
No one else in the crowd got as high of shots as mine!!!! What a good idea! My wide 18mm lens worked well for these pix (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238767
Here they had Utah's Governor Gary Richard Herbert speak!!!! UP did their re-enactment of the "Golden Spike" (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5231095
Went to the Utah State Railroad Museum where I have not been since 7-2005 with Dad (RCJ I)! Here is a static UP "Gas Turbine" set (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308929
This Southern Pacific® SD45R has been repainted with the SP "Headlight Package" added since my last time seeing it almost 14 years earlier (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308930
Rio Grande® SD40T-2 was the last DRGW unit "Unpatched" working for UP! They also added the "Mars Light" and classification lights (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308955
Union Pacific® "Centennial" DDA40X #6916! In 1969, UP had the first of these "Centennial" units completed just in time for the "100th Anniversary" of the driving of the "Golden Spike!!!!" This shows exactly how UP is just as dedicated in bringing back the "Big Boy" in 2019 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308953
Here's Union Pacific® 4-8-4 # 833 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308954
Nice seeing the UP "Torch Car" from the 2002 Olympics winter games of Salt Lake City, UT (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308961
Bought a "Golden Spike" shirt from a nice "Happy Hands" girl!!!! Then went to see UP's "Experience Union Pacific®" display! Here is UP ES44AH #2650 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238773
About to wait in line to tour this nice car (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238774
Inside they had this guy explaining about the "Golden Spike" and "Union Pacific®" (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238775
Taking the FrontRunner® train back to Salt Lake City Central station, passed the "Backside" of the event which does not look nearly as good: (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309552
Here we are passing above a UP freight at this junction in Ogden, UT #1 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309547
#2 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309549
After arriving at Salt Lake Central station, there was a southbound UP freight train passing a stationary Utah® Railway train (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309556
Our southbound FrontRunner® train left with MP36PH-3S #1 on the rear (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309571
I quickly saw the rear of the UP freight train had a caboose!!!! This was a good catch (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309563
The caboose passing the Utah® train with engines in G&W corporate colors (Canon® T-90 35mm):

Another Utah® train near Salt Lake City Central station (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309560
Later that evening we went looking for trains! Here's a UP GP15-1 sitting (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309565
Amazingly we found another Utah® train! It had two SD50S locomotives, originally from Hamersly® Iron of Australia! Utah® used to have five of these, now has three (two sold to Indiana & Ohio® RWY)!!!! Lead engine #6060 in G&W orange, but the second one was still in Utah® Railway "Red/Gray" colors!!!!! I was glad to see that as only two locos remain in those "Original" colors on the railway (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309566
As it heads north with SD60S #6061 trailing (Canon® T-90 35mm):

Friday May 10, 2019
Today being the actual "Golden Spike" 150th Anniversary, we went in the rental vehicle to Promontory Summit, Utah! We had tickets of course! On my way in at the entrance (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308775
I was able to get to the front, but not for long! Here they are raising an old 1869 type flag (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308780
A guy speaking by 4-4-0 "Accurate Replicas" Central Pacific® #60 and Union Pacific® #119 (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308779
The crowd was very large for this "Once in a Lifetime" event (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308785
Two steam engine "Replicas" are seen with a big crowd (Canon® T-90 35mm):

Far back view (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308804
Here's the "Guy with the Spike," Norman Ten (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308802
Me with "Guy with the Spike" wearing that shirt from a nice "Happy Hands" girl at Ogden (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308803
Now for some actual B&W film pictures!!!! Here are some kids sitting by Central Pacific® #60 (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5231110
Back side of Central Pacific® #60 (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):

They had both steam engines operating!!!! Here is UP #119 (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5231115
The place before the last live "Re-enactment" happened! There was a tent that fried fish too, amazingly a "Desolate" location (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5231109
Wow!!!! It was so great to be here on the "150th Anniversary!!!!" There even was a guy with an old "Single View" camera that A.J. Russell used in 1869 (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5231120
After leaving Promontory Summit, UT, I wanted more trains!!!! Only caught a westbound UP freight at Corinne, UT, part of the original "Transcontinental Railroad!!!!" It had two UP SD40N locomotives (photo on slide film, not scanned)! Then went to look at Magna, UT, hoping to see a train at Kennecott Copper®─only to find train cars parked!
Saturday May 11, 2019
Went to Magna, Utah by Kennecott Copper®!!!! We caught an Omaha Track® GP39-2, one of the old Kennecott® engines (OT is the contract switching service for Kennecott® now, Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5310832
This is Utah's largest smokestack (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5310845
Saw Savage Bingham & Garfield Railroad® engines from the freeway (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309592
Now, there was supposed to be an NRHS train on the Heber Valley Scenic Railroad®! However, the train derailed upon leaving (we were not there when it happened)!!!! Someone forgot to unlock the "Derail Lock" and this is why it derailed!!!! We were there a few hours after it happened! We were going to ride the regular 3:00 p.m. train, but saw them slowly "Re-railing" their Pullman® "Business Car" #100 instead (Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239081
Another view (Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239086
Another (Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239083
Guys working!!!! Locomotives helped "Wench" the car inch by inch (Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239085
They have old GP9 locomotives!!!! These are in Boston & Maine® and Maine Central® colors from the eastern U.S. (Pan Am Railways® painted the 'Heritage' of these railroads they own, Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239066
These engines were recently purchased from Pan Am Railways® and plans are to repaint them into DRGW colors! That is nice, but not as nice as these look (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239078
There was this old Great Western Railway® GP9 that was also supposed to be on the NRHS trip that morning (Mamiya® C-220 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5239091
After "Scenic Route," that evening we went to the UP Salt Lake City yard (photographs taken with permission, Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5313846
UP SD40N locomotives─the engines on right shove a train south into the yard (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5313847
We were again on the way to Magna, UT. However, eating at Popeye's Chicken® made us change our direction! It ended up working great! I decided to go to the Midvale, UT, Utah Railway® yard! Passing it on the freeway I saw the only other loco still in "Original" Utah® colors! Found the entrance and talked to a worker whom let me photograph trains! The entrance had Savage® and Utah® (in G&W orange) engines (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309593
Off to get Utah® SD50S #6062!!!! The engine was about a half mile north of the entrance! I "Zoomed" through the "Brambles" between a wall and many "Tankers" as fast as I could!!!! The sun was about to set and I'd miss my shot! My Mom (Susan) couldn't catch me to let me know that I could have "Smoothly" walked on the RR right of way!!!! I got there in time to get pix of this engine still in Utah® "Red/Gray" colors (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238708
Man this engine looks nice!!!! How many more chances can you get a Utah® engine in these colors in Utah state?
No "Orange" in sight (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238703
With only two remaining on this RR, I probably wouldn't be back here before everything is "Orange!!!!" Caught all three SD50S engines!!!! This ended the night very well (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5309604
Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12, 2019
This was my last day to catch trains in Utah! We were off to "Chase" the Union Pacific® "Spike 150 Train!!!!" Went to a rest area near Morgan, UT and waited! In a little while here comes "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 #4014, "Living Legend" 4-8-4 #844, ET44AH #2650 and 12 cars! This train looked great (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238681
Passing a reservoir in the Weber Canyon (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5232784
Man I love this shot of the steam (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):

Rear of train on the original "Transcontinental Railroad" route (Pentax® 645 Medium Format):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5238684
We got ahead of the train since it had a "Service Stop" in Morgan! Went to this rest area, Taggarts, UT. It was almost a half mile to the tracks! People were awful!!!! Cars were backing out, people cussing! I took a couple cameras, went down and found a "Secluded" spot with a view of a tunnel and trestle (Canon® AE-1 35mm, Fuji Acros 100 BW film):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5232790
I hid behind bushes with some Railfans and out of the way of so many people! We waited for about 20 minutes! Here it comes! Then, about three seconds before "Big Boy" popped out of the tunnel, a guy "Monkeyed" his way in by the bridge and got in everyone's way!!!! That "Lunatic!!!!" After the train, I yelled at him saying "Hey, what were you thinking?" He said "It just made sense!" This shot doesn't show the "Lunatic" though (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5232808
He only appears to be a "Sasquatch" in the lower right (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5232800
This picture is featured in my "2020 Train Calendar," I produce them every year (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):

UP "Dome" (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5232809
It was impossible to catch this train on the freeway where we were! Luckily, I purchased a Utah DeLorme® detailed map! The map was hard to find! The train's next "Service Stop" was Echo, UT! The map showed a good side road with fewer cars! It paralleled the tracks! We passed the stopped train at Echo! The train blew the whistle! We Kept going! Echo Canyon Road east! The train would soon catch up to us! This was great!!!! We were first in line on the chase!!!! I took "MA Motor Drive" pix out the rear window in motion, seen in Echo Canyon, UT #1 (Canon® AE-1 Program 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5311471

Today being the actual "Golden Spike" 150th Anniversary, we went in the rental vehicle to Promontory Summit, Utah! We had tickets of course! On my way in at the entrance (Canon® T-90 35mm):
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=5308775
I was able to get to the front, but not for long! Here they are raising an old 1869 type flag (Canon® T-90 35mm):

I love sharing the pix to go along with the long story! And with that, I "End" the post showing engineer Ed Dickens signing someone's "Race to Promontory" book!!!! Thank you for posting, Robert. You had a great experience! Your report is very enjoyable to follow along.

Re: "Golden Spike" 150th Anniversary trip, Utah, May 2019!!!
Denver & Rio Grande Western, now Durango & Silverton, 473-476-478 were never retired.
They do go out of service from time to time, sometimes for long periods. The D&S doesn't need all of its' locomotives to be kept in serviceable condition.
Glad your mom was willing to make the trip.
I'm kind of guessing that you were happy
My family visited Promontory Summit somewhere around 1967. It was a desolate location then.

Wow! What a great trip. Neat stories to go along with the pictures. I really like your last photo of the steam rising up over Ed as he signs the book. I too think that captures the essence of your trip.

Thank You all!!!! Yes DaveO, I was "Happy!!!!" I thought about Durango & Silverton®, but I guess "Narrow Gauge" doesn't count! I guess it should say this about UP 844: "Only mainline Standard Gauge steam engine never retired!" I rode D&S once, July 2005, which was that same trip where I previously was at Utah State Railroad Museum!!!! Amazingly, there are 100 pictures "Exact" on this post! I don't think I have ever seen one post with this many! The "Golden Spike" could not happen this year because of the "Virus Crap!!!!" Good thing last year wasn't like it is now!

Also, thank you for including the local short line railroads especially the independents.

You are Welcome AARR! I love seeing shortlines because of their older power!!!! I sure enjoyed the trip last year!!!! WOW, just to be at the actual "Golden Spike" site for its "Sesquicentennial" was awesome! I almost didn't get that date! I first bought two parking pass tickets (thought they were per person) online for May 11 because it was sold out for May 10th! Later I called and they were able to get "May 10th" for me! It wouldn't be the same on May 11! Maybe I should call "Honest Abe" Abraham Lincoln on his "Smartphone" to thank him! Some people didn't realize who that was supposed to be (second picture in this long post)! I was able to sell one (and gave one) of those next day's tickets to people at UP's event in Ogden! With the "Coronavirus," I knew this year's event would be cancelled for the "151st Anniversary" of the "Golden Spike" today!
Here's the Trains Magazine® article about the "2020" cancellation: https://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2 ... -cancelled

I have hundreds of rolls of film (35mm and 120) currently in both the refrigerator and freezer! I usually buy all my film on eBay®!!!! I look for deals, say $5 per roll of 120 film. It varies. Thanks for asking!

Excellent documentation, Robert - really nice job ! Thanks for sharing. In case you have any inclination to thank Mr. Dickens for making many of your photos possible, you might want to send him a copy of that final photo. I have a feeling he'd like it. That's a fine picture !

In case you have any inclination to thank Mr. Dickens for making many of your photos possible, you might want to send him a copy of that final photo. I have a feeling he'd like it. That's a fine picture !Jetlink wrote:Wow! What a great trip. Neat stories to go along with the pictures. I really like your last photo of the steam rising up over Ed as he signs the book. I too think that captures the essence of your trip.

Thanks! Jetlink, that photo definitely captures the "Essence" of my trip!!!! That was "Exactly" one year ago today, May 12!!!! Man o' War, that's a great idea! I probably should send Ed Dickens that picture, especially since UP "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 #4014 is not going to be doing trips this year! Too bad I didn't know the person who got their book signed!!!! They would like a copy too I'm sure! Here's a video from UP's Senior Vice President Scott Moore explaining about the cancellation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5T3hRg ... e=youtu.be
