Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
The crew of G713 is currently taking 544 solo to Plymouth, long hood forward. EB thru Brighton's EE at 18:19.
541 is sitting on the main just west of Bauer Rd, not running. Interesting that they didn't just take 544 out the east end.
In reference to sparrow24, they were lined west after going thru Brighton as well, seems as soon as the block clears they get lined back.
I'm surprised they had only made it to South Lyon by then, but there's a 25mph limit for LHF right?

Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
Eastbound through South Lyon at 18:38.
Green Oak DD at CH39.1 said 6 axles, 58 feet.
They stopped briefly just east of the Mill St. crossing in South Lyon. They proceeded East at 18:52.
EAS South Lyon is showing a clear signal for something westbound.

Don't forget the slack between the knuckles. If a long train is stretched out it's going to be several feet longer than if it isn't stretched. I always figure that the differing length reports from the defect detectors are more likely due to the slack (or lack thereof).Tom49801 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 11:38 amRN Dispatcher had told Q326 Saugatuck is 5,400 feet long yet the 2008 time table says it's only 5,000 feet long. The DD at mp CG91.9 had reported Q326 as being 5,007 feet long, but the DD reports aren't always that accurate since the length they report varies from site to site. Changes with the train's speed as it travels thru the DD sites varies the length reported among other factors such as the proper spacing of the magnetic rail mounted transducers.

Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
You'll see the footage vary quite a bit for the Amtrak P370 & P371 by as much as 12 feet. From the systems I had worked with, the gating transducers (Transducers "A" & "B") near the HBD scanners are supposed to be 24 inches from center to center with the Transducer "A"'s center line 8 inches from the rail mounted scanner's centerline. The calculations for speed & axles are based on what the Transducers detect by the passing flanges. 24 inch transducer spacing doesn't leave much room for error for the calculations.J T wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 7:05 pmDon't forget the slack between the knuckles. Appears this line, among others, use an AFO or FSO rail overlay signal for the advance train detection. On the NEC, we had advance start transducers instead, and they were placed 75 feet in either direction with the speed calculations based on the time of travel from one of the advance start transducers to the 1st gating transducer. At 75 feet vs. 24 inches, the error margin for speed & length is significantly reduced.

Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
Just to specify about something I find interesting:
An EAS showing for a westbound is incorrect, EAS stands for Eastbound Absolute Signal, the absolute signal for eastbounds. WAS is Westbound, the absolute signal for westbound trains. Each controlled point (be it WE Brighton, EE Brighton, WE South Lyon, or EE South Lyon) will have an EAS and a WAS.
More or less, if the lights face west, it’s for eastbounds, if the lights face east, it’s for westbounds. In the diagram I made, a westbound is lined.
Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
Interesting. Diagram makes it make sense, but I never put much thought into it. I generally have always just said "westbound lined at EE xyz" or similar... so I never really thought about EAS/WAS at each end.

Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
CSXT 544 came back solo through South Lyon westbound at 20:28. (per Green Oak DD and radio)
I couldn't get trackside again, but it seemed slow through South Lyon... I wonder if they went to Plymouth to turn it at the wye for some reason?

Re: CSX Location Updates - Oct 2021
They turned it at Plymouth so they could have one FF unit. Then they will get 541 and proceed to Webberville to get the grain train. Then they will head back East to Plymouth with three units and the 85 cars.
Train’s destination is Waycross, GA. 85 cars of soybeans.
