Q116 south at Birmingham at 7:20. CN 2319 and BNSF 9191. 116 cars.

There were only a few containers on 116 this morning, all on the rear.

On the head end of 116 were a lot of opened coiled steel cars, mostly GRW (?) gondolas, full of steel. I have been seeing dozens of cars of steel going both south and north on CN's Holly Sub trains these past few weeks. Sometimes National Steel cars carrying it. Any idea where they are going and why both directions? CN never hauled much steel before out this way. The loaded National Steel cars were going south the couple times I saw them so they were not coming from downriver Detroit.

Also, Pontiac Yard seems to have one track full of stored coiled steel cars.

And 513 has been moving a lot of steel cars both ways from I think the Conrail interchange in Detroit this past couple of years. Any idea where those are going to?

CN took over a lot of business off of NS/CR. It’s coils from US Steel in Gary, IN to US Steel in Ecorse, MI.

They come to BC on EB A492. Cut and put on A450 or Q116. Then back empty on E251/A491.

Idk the local job that takes them to Ecorse but I’m sure someone else does.

This started around the first of the year.

We are also seeing an increase in coils on M396 to Toronto. Possibly eventually going to Hamilton perhaps.
