Rust-bucket 40 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Q327 accelerates after meeting X500 and G964 at Fox. Rusty YN2 SD40-2s are now sadly just a thing of the past! 6/13/2010
Forgotten by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Sitting damaged and picked clean of anything of value, the Southern heritage unit waits for movement to Altoona for eventual repair. This unit was damaged after it hit a rock slide and sat in this spot for many months. As I understand it, it was finally recently moved to the shops. 8/13/2022
Zebras in Durand by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
L500 rolls around the High Wye in Durand behind a pair of Zebra-striped GP40-2Ws. This was the only time I can remember seeing a wide cab GP40 on 500, GTW GP38-2s and GP9Rs being far more ubiquitous. 2/20/2010
Weary Caboose by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
A Santa Fe wide vision caboose sits in BNSF's yard in Golden, CO, looking a bit worse for the wear. With all of its windows and doors plated over, this old caboose is now just a shoving platform. 10/20/2021

Working Durand Yard by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Huron & Eastern 702 has just arrived from Bay City and is in the process of yarding their train with B30-7 #5492 and GP40-2W #9712. 4/29/2011
NS GP15-1 #1456 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Built in 1979, NS #1456 was one of one hundred GP15-1s built for Conrail that spelled the end for many older EMD F units and GP7s/GP9s. With the fleet divided between NS and CSX in 1999, this unit would soldier on for its new owner still in Conrail blue. About a year after I shot it working a local here at Pine, NS decided they were done with the GP15s and sold them all to Larry's Truck & Electric. Today #1456 works for Patriot Rail's Louisiana & Northwestern. 5/27/2006
Classic Surfliner by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
While I certainly wish I could've shot more of them, I glad I made it out to California twice to shoot the Surfliner F59s. Here north-bound train #769 rolls along the Pacific Coast Highway near Sea Cliff. 3/6/2011
GTW GP9R #4625 by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Built in 1954 as GTW 4543, rebuilt in 1992 at the Battle Creek shops into a GP9R. In the rebuild, the locomotives received a complete rewire, new 645 power assemblies, 26L brakes, and new cabs and noses that were built by VMV. #4625 is seen here working L500 in Durand back in May of 2010. 5/1/2010
Palmer Lake MAC by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
BNSF #8837, by then just another typical aging SD70MAC with the middle part of the top stripe burned off, leads a loaded coal train south onto the single track on the Joint Line in Palmer Lake, CO. 7/21/2010
North Yard by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
A pair of SD40Ns move through North Yard while a UP car man drives by. Denver, CO 10/20/2021
Albion by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
A pair of SD40-2s are working on hard the old B&O as they lug Q386 east through Albion on a clear November morning in 2011. 11/12/2011
CNW Days by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Chicago & North Western SD40-2 #6847 and GP7R #4160 are in charge of the caboose train during IRM's Annual Diesel Days in July of 2009. IRM's restored CNW commuter train can be seen behind the caboose hop. 7/18/2009
Conway by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
An SD70ACe and an ES44AC back out of the east end of Conway to rescue a train that outlawed on the other side of the control point. In the distance, an eastbound intermodal prepares to depart while a hump job shoves a cut of cars over the hump. 8/14/2022
The Moo by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad GP9 #101, known colloquially as "The Moo", sits tied to a string of ballast hoppers in Garibaldi. This ex C&O unit became stranded out here when the middle section of the Tillamook branch was badly damaged in a storm in 2007. Now operated by the Oregon Coast Scenic, The Moo sees occasional use as a back up for their main diesel, Great Northern F7A #274. 9/5/2022

GTW 4543 was built in 1957 IIRC. It was in the group 4539-4546.

Don't judge a book by it's cover by David R. Collins, on Flickr
When I say this, take it seriously, photos don’t do the ALC-42’s justice, THEY. LOOK. AMAZING. I found that out for myself once I arrived at Chicago Union Station on my train from Detroit. Here’s one of them, #304, sitting on track #3 at Chicago Union Station. Thanks to Conductor Hugo on my train for letting me shoot this photo!

Unfortunately their reliability seems to lag quite a bit behind their looks.
Considering the location of the photo, you did manage to get a decent photo there.

Evening West-Bound by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
Lead by one of CSX's venerable Dash 9s, Q335 rolls into Grand Rapids on a warm July evening. Over 100 years ago, this location was the site of a bad head-on collision between 2 passenger trains. 7/21/2011

A pair of former SD45s (now SD40-2s internally) sit in the shade at the literal end of the line in Banks while the crew grabs lunch. Definitely weird seeing a B&P unit in Oregon! 9/6/2022

October Sky by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr
The timing of CSX's OCS arriving into Grand Rapids coincided nicely with my drive home from work. As I pulled up to this spot, I figured I'd settle for some late evening shadows as the sun had been hidden by dark clouds pretty much all day. As luck would have it, the sun broke through the clouds maybe a minute before the train came around the corner. With the entire scene bathed in that beautiful Fall evening light, I got everything I wanted and then some! 10/7/2022

Killing time while waiting for our fearless leader to arrive with the backhoe, I took a minute to snap our two MP15ACs with our hirail truck during our MOW-Blitz weekend. The Hamilton Northwestern crews got nearly 200 ties replaced over 2 days in several spots in dire need of attention. My job was to run the locomotives, which were needed to run the air spiker. 10/9/2022

The only Port of Tillamook Bay RR SD9 to remain relatively intact, #6139 has seen some use by the Oregon Coast Scenic. Tied onto a cut of ballast hoppers with The Moo on the other end, my understanding is that the 6139 is currently out of service. 9/5/2022

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

Today's theme is "Sluggin'."
Y121 switching Zeeland with one of the eldest Road Slugs (a former B&O GP35 of 1964) remaining on the CSX roster:
Meanwhile, the trademark slanted side number boards give evidence to the original heritage of this RPU6 yard slug at Elkhart, which was built as a PRR Alco RSD12 in 1957.

Over 25 years after the Union Pacific absorbed the Chicago & North Western, they still practice left-hand running on the Geneva Sub. Here an out-bound "Scoot" arrives at the station in Elmhurst, behind an F40PH-3 still wearing the old Metra colors. 10/2/2022

If there's a horn I'd listen to every day for the rest of my life, it'd be NS 5346's RS3L. I like the lighting too. This is a marathon, not a sprint. by David R. Collins, on Flickr
The title of this post is what my dad said describing Santa Fe Junction. There were trains left right and center every few minutes, so his phrase was certainly accurate. However, the first true over/under meet I was waiting for occurred the last day I was there. With a BNSF manifest crawling under the bridge while an eastbound loaded UP Coal Train passes over on the fly-high track (as I call it).
